AARP did mine for free, got both Fed and State refunds a week and several days later. $1750. That's the most I've ever gotten in my life. New rear brakes for the car and paying second half of real estate taxes early. Isn't that a hoot? Get a tax refund only to pay taxes. Well, I have savings for those but like to keep as much as I can in there.

I've done some preliminary work (adding up medical/ charitable expenses, the first for my own purposes since they won't be deductible, the second because they are deductible on state but not federal). But I am stalled there, because I haven't yet received my main 1099s from my investment accounts.

I am still waiting on a final resolution of a federal tax issue that arose in April 2022 - started with a transposed number (by me) that changed my filing status, which resulted in a 1040X being filed a few days later when I caught the mistake. That led to a 7 month wait for the IRS to process the 1040X - and when it was, the IRS person misread my account transcript, added 2021's tax in by mistake, and assessed an additional $2k+ in taxes plus late fees and penalties. I paid that immediately before I started to try to figure out where I had made that huge mistake. Neither I nor my tax prep software help desk could. In the end I called the IRS, got an agent on the line and spent about 2+ hours (mostly on hold) while he figured out the mistake. THEN, they did credit the overpayment and charges to my account, but did not send me the $. Fine, I thought, I will just apply it to my tax due for 2023.

I had to make another phone call to get them to release that money to apply to my 2023 return! and when they did, they made another mistake, claiming that the amount refunded to me had been too much, and so withholding some of it. (Fortunately not a large amount, less than $50).

Another phone call, with an unintelligible/illogical explanation (I think that person really didn't know ), followed by a dispute claim filed by paper - which still hasn't been processed a year later.... I have gotten 2 letters from the IRS in the meantime, telling me that they are still "researching it and need more time".

We have a pretty straight-forward return but use a tax preparer anyway. They’re cheap, and I figure they should know more about taxes than I do. My wife’s compensation is very dependent on corporate goals, bonus, stock price, etc. so even though it’s “an interest free loan to the government” we try to over withhold rather than have an unpleasant surprise. Sometimes it ends up being a pretty big refund, sometimes smaller, rarely do we owe. Often we’ll owe the state but get a return from fed, or is it the other way around, but it nets out to a refund. I probably have everything I need at this point so maybe I’ll be nice and get it to the preparer before the last minute rush for a change!

Overpaying taxes during the year, especially if by more than a minor amount, is as much a poor decision as would be paying more than is due monthly for, for instance, utilities, rent or credit cards. If it's not due, it's not due.

Having a balance due (if your payments through the year have been adequate based upon one of the prior year amount standards) is an unpleasant surprise only if you decide to make it one. Among the "adult lessons" each of my kid was given before leaving the family home in their journey to adulthood is that they should try hard to be sure their total income tax costs increase as much as possible every year. Measured from one year to the next. If the indirect message isn't immediately apparent, think about it awhile. But not for too long.

You really REALLY need to rework your withholdings. That's not good use of your resources,

Is there any time it makes sense for an adult to lend the government the amount of his or her taxes all year, just to get it back (without interest) in April? You could have gotten at least 5% interest on those dollars in the most secure of investments during 2023.

Both sisters had theirs done too early. Now they both received another 1099 (which they should have expected if they'd been paying attention), have to do amended returns.

My mother (with my direction) waited until late-March last year (for 2022 tax year) for an expected corrected 1099 issued mid-March. Another unexpected correction on it was issued on April 6 so she had to do an amended return even after holding back that long.

I don't want a large refund. That means the gubbermint held *my* money for months to no advantage for me. I prefer to owe a small/reasonable balance.

Raee, you should reach out to any company who still owes you a 1099. They must be mailed to you on 1/31/24 the latest. You would have received them by now.

JoanM, it depends on what kind of 1099 and what is involved on it. My mother's initial 1099-DIV/INT from Wells Fargo dated 2/10/24 advises that the numbers aren't final. Specifically, the GNMA investment has a reporting deadline of 3/15/24 per U.S. Treasury regulations. The GNMA is what triggered the second 1099 correction on 4/6/23 for her 2022 tax year.

My 1099-DIV from WF for 2023 is also dated 2/10/2024, although it doesn't advise anything about "not final" and I don't have a GNMA (which those apparently cause some ruckus).

I finished my taxes aboutweek ago. I do them myself. For about the last 15 years i have been buying the H &R Block program and using that. I also do a son's and my brother's. I had to pay quite a bit this year so i have sent in a W-4 to have taxes taken out of my social security. I think i should pretty much break even next year.

I get that sentiment, I really do. But finances unfortunately don’t interest me enough to worry about my withholding each time variables change. Let’s say the net refund is $10,000. If it were in a HYSA for the entire year it would earn like $500 taxable; big deal. But it wouldn’t be in there the entire year so it’s even less. Of course it could be invested in something more aggressive, which may or may not make money by the time I maybe have to pull it out. End of the day I’d rather get $10,000 back than owe $2,000. YMMV and I know it does. I don’t disagree, I just don’t care.

(Edit - I should add that the numbers I threw out there are just for example. Generally talking considerably less, just trying to show how even a significant refund may not mean a whole lot of opportunity cost.)

My taxes are simple. Single with no dependents. I do them myself and always get a little back. I understand the belief that its unwise and silly to basically lend the government money interest free. But that has never bothered me. What bothers me is the amount of my money that I have to pay in taxes because I have no dependents. And couple that with watching the people with dependents, using the resources my taxes pay for that I do not use, all while getting tax breaks and a huge refund, THAT is what annoys me. Its pathetic and backwards. I always file and get it over with ASAP every year, so that I can forget about it.

I was the payroll department (and all the rest of the bookkeeping) at work, when I was working. I set up a spreadsheet with tax tables from Form 1040-ES, entered my income as it occurred through the year and adjusted my withholding on every check per the calculations. I estimated it so closely one year that my refund or balance due (whichever it was) was $2. The estimation got more complicated when ACA came into play because the numbers for it typically aren't available until near the end of the year.

Many of my reports of both income and deductible charitables have arrived.

Our reporting deadline is Apr. 30.

I thought I had figures and paperwork pretty much ready for my accountant and was going to drop those things off this week - then some things came up and I was busy. Her office is out towards the beach not right here close, and by the time I've navigated her drive into her property with the horses, goats, chickens, ducks, cats and dogs running around as greeters, its rarely a quick trip.

Yesterday afternoon I got one more 1099 in the mail I wasn't even thinking of. It doesn't amount to much but there has been nothing withheld from it and it will change my final figure slightly. I typically owe a little and plan on it.

Good news was my SIL mentioned her property taxes had gone down. We haven't rec'd statements yet but she'd looked hers up. I asked her where and checked my own. More than $850 less than last year, it will make up for IRS tax. We must have satisfied a school levy or the new storm water treatment plant or something and I'd missed that had taken place. I'd assumed and was planning for higher, not lower.

And I'll call my accountant in the morning, make sure she's going to be there either tomorrow or Monday. I was determined to get my things to her before the end of February this year and not quite so 'last minute'....even though she's always graciously accepted my work. About 35 years now.

DH and I have used HR Block for years. I don't trust to do it myself. I only got large refund because John only worked 2 months before he passed away. That made deductions different. I won't get that much next year.

We have a business, which has to be filed by 3/15. I always get my stuff to the CPA in January. Ours are done and gone. A small refund from federal, half of which has to go to the state.

Geez. A break-even bottom line would be a wonderful gift for us, a refund would be a miracle.

But on the other hand, we have income to pay what’s due and I’m grateful for that.

My tax preparer said I was just a little better than bringing in a shoe box filled with receipts. 😂 I had everything in file folders. I had spread sheets....and he asked for a condensed version of those. I expected to pay a little...I did.
