Do you brush snow off your Thuja occidentalis
Comments (9)Contrast all this with the straight species like in my woods. Last year, many young trees were bent right to the ground under snow load. With acres of these trees to deal with, I'm not out there shaking snow off! Nor need I be. This species developed to withstand heavy snow, long before any of us were around to notice. The species can form multiple leaders. It can, when tipped by the wind, form new vertical leaders out of what had been side branches. But its main form is to be a single-leader tree, not unlike a spruce or fir in general structure. But yeah, some of those cultivars will open up like an over-ripe banana. And true also, some of the distortions caused by being weighted down for long periods by ice and snow can permanently change the orientation of individual stems. +oM...See Moredo you wash your dishes before you wash your dishes?
Comments (20)One of the reasons to *not* rinse/prewash dishes is if you use an enzyme detergent it needs the food particles to work better. It'll etch glass and stuff if it doesn't have the food particles. I can't explain it well, but it's easy research for a more thorough explanation. Most just recommend scraping the dishes (and really, who wouldn't?!) then into the DW. I haven't had a dishwasher for more than 30 years but I'm starting to miss it. I would get grossed out though when it left stuff on it. When washing by hand and using a good soap it gets clean. Sure, you just put it back in and rewash but it still bugs me. It also bugs me to see people leave dirty dishes in the DW for a week before washing them. Argh! If it takes a week to fill it, you should have a smaller DW or use a top rack only feature. This is what impresses me about the F&P Dish Drawers. And geez, I can wash a few dishes FAR faster than an hour or two for a dishwasher! LOL And when you compare the time to load the dishwasher vs washing, it's pretty close. Time's not a factor. It's the hassle of washing them. I soak my dishes and a quick swish, rinse in HOT water and into the drainer to dry. Putting them away is comparable to time in a DW. Oh, and one thing I found out quickly, the way you load it makes a big difference. You have to learn how the water sprays and make sure it's not blocked for effective washing....See MoreHow do you clean/wash your fruit?
Comments (20)From what I've read, pesticide residues are really hard to get off of the skins of fruits and vegetables, especially those that have waxy coatings. I almost always peel all of those types of fruits and veggies now--apples, pears, potatoes--all get peeled because I can't afford organic. If I'm using the peels, I wash with soap and warm water, that's what I read that does the best job of getting off the residues. Now, as for the germs that come from people's hands that might have handled them . . . that is a huge worry!! I'm taking microbiology class this winter and by far the germiest places are those that get repeatedly touched by human hands and not washed. For example, the bathrooms actually aren't that germy since they get washed, but the button for the elevator in the science building---WHOA! For hand germs, a mild acid solution might help. I'm somewhat lax about that but I always wash with repeated washes of water. Unfortunately, when it comes to germs, that just kind of spreads them around, but it's not pointless, it does dillute them, making it less likely that you'll get enough of the baddies to make you sick. I also read that running water, repeatedly is better than soaking, and a brush to get into the nooks and crannies is good. If you've got one of those spray hoses on your sink, it is perfect for this application. Rinsing with lots of water is definately better than nothing. Most of the "germs" (bacteria) on fruits and vegetables won't harm us, so I don't think you have to be paranoid about it. But there are a few that can, and when your produce comes from thousands of miles away, handled by various businesses and employees along the way, a lot can happen to it. To me, this is one of the reasons NOT to get worried about poisoning your family with home food preservation. It's no more likely that you will poison your family than some Yahoo at the canning factory, if you're even slightly more intelligent than the average Yahoo. Learn about and understand the principles behind safe food preservation and then do what the science dictates, it's no more difficut than cooking. As for grapes . . . sigh. I love them but rarely eat them, I know too much about them. Occasionally I will find some organic ones I can afford. In my dreams I have a grape arbor. My neighbors actually have one! I just haven't gotten around to it yet!...See MoreHow often do you wash your windows?
Comments (14)Mother nature washes the outside. I think I may have spot cleaned windows inside about half a dozen times in the last ten years, as needed, not as a whole window-cleaning chore. When we first moved in our house 25+ years ago, we were looking at replacement windows. The sales rep REPEATEDLY mentioned how the windows pop open and tilt in for easy cleaning, always looking at me when he said this, not my husband. I found this thoroughly, irritatingly sexist. On his umpteenth mention of it I cut him off and said, dude, I have never cleaned a window in my life and I don't intend to start now. Haha (They do open nicely though lol, although I usually stick to cleaning the inside!) I have so little time. I barely have time to work in the garden. The house always comes second to me. Partly because I have a husband and son who live with me who think there are little housecleaning fairies. So the heck with it. Let those pixies do it (or not!). I'd rather spend my precious free time outside. Sorry if this sounds like a rant lol. Today is my only day off in two weeks (not to mention my birthday weekend) and I just spent three hours attempting a plumbing fix. I've never done plumbing in my life other than turn on a faucet lol, we don't have the proper tools, I finally finished the job properly and it still didn't fix the problem. I could have been outside on this (finally!!) first beautiful weekend of spring instead! So now I am finally off to go rake up some leaves! Yay! Well... as soon as I finish my second piece of birthday cake this morning. Hey, don't judge - I just did plumbing on my day off lol. I deserve it! :) Dee...See More- 2 years ago
