Wall Make over in formal living room

I am replacing the vertical dark wood to horizontal and adding a new mantle. Suggestions on wood color, and board width. Keep fireplace brick red.

I would just paint the wood you have the same color as the rest of your walls. Horizontal (shiplap) paneling won’t really complement the architecture of your home or the furnishings.

I agree, paint, and get thicker wood mantle. You can change it later, but I’d try that 1st. Nice room!

Definitely formal, actually stiff. Soften up all the square edges with some curves. If the birds are 2 pieces lower one of them. Lower the painting to 5" above sofa. Higher end tables, should be height of sofa arm so a drink or book can be placed without reaching down. I'm not keen on the rug placement, from the angle of the picture it's hard to tell if it's centered between furniture or not. Round pillows rather than rectangle and a throw tossed over the sofa will add softness.

I would use the side of the room where you currently have your sofas as the "adult" space, and the corner where you have the play rug as the "kids" space. You need to separate the two. So move the desk to the adult area - either on wall to the right side of the opening to the family room, or slide the sofa under the window closer to the other one and put the desk on the wall between the sofa and entry. Move the two tall storage units to the staircase wall, and use them exclusively for toy and game storage. The kids kitchen can go on the wall to the left of the doorway opening. From your entry, you will see mostly the adult area, and the messier toys and all the shelves won't be immediately visible. One other option that could work depending on your floor plan is combining your living room and dining room in this space, and using the dining room exclusively as a playroom.

Oh lucky you! I would LOVE a separate living room. Consider how you want to use the space. Preferably, something other than "a pretty place for people to see when they walk in before they go to the family room." While that's fine if that's what you really want it to be, it has become the reason people are (unfortunately, in my view) eliminating "formal" living rooms in new homes. It's SO nice to have an away room, which this could be for you. So, conversation? Reading? Any musicians in your family? How about board games? In my house this would be the reading/conversation/music room, so I would furnish it with 4 comfy chairs in a circle with a center table, maybe a bookshelf or two and a piano. What you do with it depends on the space you have.

Thank you. Unfortunately the windows need repair and the wood around them need to be taken off and can’t be reinstalled. Two companies have come in and said they can’t put the wood back as is.

Post photos of the whole room so we can provide contextual advice. Horizontal ship lap (if that’s what you are referring to ) is basically passé and doesn’t seem to match your home or decor. Maybe just smooth drywall would be best? I’ve never needed to replace the walls when replacing windows- trim maybe. Maybe I’m not understanding.

If you can go light I think it would really soften the space. I am not someone who likes a mix of patterns. I am simple lady. I personally do not like a bright orange red Brick pattern mixed with a wood pattern. I like one or the other. But if you are going to mix think light. Unless your style is Mid-Mod and then I am sure you can find some ideas on houzz. Here are a few that look nice but maybe Shiplap is out.

If the wood can't be put back consider just having drywall instead.

The new material next to the brick that appears to have some issues that need to be address, is going to make the brick look even worse. Consider everything at the same time.

Perhaps if you painted the existing wood panelling it might make it possible to make repairs when replacing your windows. The panel style you presently have seems to coordinate well with your style, I don't think horizontal would give you the same effect.

Referring to BeverlyFLADeziner last photo just above, the painted panelling and brick would look very nice with your decor in a warm white:
