Comments (3)I bought both these from High Country years ago. Hattie was given to a friend in a slightly warmer zone - 5, not 4, where she did much better. I was a bit shocked by how hot pink she was in person - not what I had in mind at all, LOL. Champagne Arches (aka Nancy Parker) is a monster rose here in zone 4! Completely cane hardy, I have it growing over an arch and the canes reach about 10'. It does require some taming, however, as it puts out a LOT of new canes - and it will sucker several feet away. It's a thorny devil, but when it blooms, it just covers itself with those peachy double blossoms. Basically once blooming, in an odd year I may have a small handful of flowers late in the season....See MoreGloire de Dijon from High Country Roses-for Josh
Comments (20)Yikes, I get a strange feeling when about to land something great. It's easy to be pulled in every rose direction, especially in Spring when the photos start to roll in. My 80 year old Japanese neighbor, the ultimate gardening mentor was disgusted with my pitiful dirt patch of two bristly shrubs three years ago when I moved in next to her artistically sculpted garden. She suggested "Get some color " so I bought a few pansies that struggled. Winter came and went . Spring she stood back and shook her head as I planted seeds, " You think their gonna grow?" To both our amazement the Nasturtium seeds I planted liked the poor dirt and North exposure. I bought a grocery store mini red rose that did terrible, a blackspot factory. Then the past summer my small garden and the two older ladies' front yards next to me that I planted, exploded with color as I spent way too much money and effort trying to do something productive for the community. Voraciously reading Antique Rose Forum daily, I went rose overboard in a good way- my neighbor smiled "Now that's how a rose is supposed to smell." This coming growing season I want to do what was always put on hold and squeezed out while I took care of other things. If I can have only a few roses to elevate my apartment backyard to an ethereal plane to escape to, I believe Gloire de Dijon is the rose for the task. I like to go out in the back yard alone to look out over the mountains, but it's probably going to become a drawing place where the parents with their kids, old ladies in their baking aprons, the young maintenance guys will take in Gloire de dijon for what roses do best. Thanks for convincing me I was right about this rose but didn't know it. Linda...See MoreParade Day, new striped rose at High Country Roses for $16.95/liner.
Comments (2)Lilyfinch, I'm tempted to. If I do, there is no rose bed spot available for it, so it will have to be container grown for a while, which may be a good idea. I will then be able to study it further to determine its strengths and weaknesses for a couple years. As a liner size it will take a couple years for it to get large enough to get a reasonable evaluation. What drew my interest to Parade Day are its fragrance, and the possibility it is only lightly, subtly striped, and with mostly light pink stripes as the photo shows, hopefully not also having bold, white striped blooms as well. I do not like most striped roses in the garden, especially those with dramatic striping. They, in full sun, look diseased to me (mildewed, bleached, or hit with weed killer). In a vase, under different light, they look great. I grow roses mostly for their garden beauty, not for arrangements. To my eyes, subtly, very mildly striped roses are lovely in the garden as well as in a vase. Moses...See MoreKudos to Matt at High Country Roses
Comments (31)Your comment must have been fate, mmmm12, as it led me to reread the entire post and find Ingrid's comment about Quicksilver buried within it. I've been going on about this rose, but haven't bought it as I like to only get from a couple of vendors to save on shipping. I had hoped to get it from Lowe's, but they are not getting in the "good" roses at the moment as their shelves are flooded due to Covid. As luck would have it, I had already ordered a goodly number of roses from Matt so emailed to see if it was too late to add it. Please keep your fingers crossed. I may still get another grafted one from Lowe's later in the season, but would feel much better to at least have one going in this year for certain. Please keep your fingers crossed that the other roses haven't shipped!...See MoreSheila z8a Rogue Valley OR
