Hiding RING Secirity Cameras in Soffit

Hi Houzzers.
Any suggestions how to hide Ring Security Cameras in soffits but ensure broadest viewing field possible? My parents are snowbirds who travel half the year and need “eyes” on their new home while they are away. How can we install these and make them look less obvious and less unattractive but keep them functional? Please post pics to clarify. Thx!!

There are both white and black stick up cams that can be attached to vertical or horizontal surfaces, including where you are thinking. That being said, half the benefit of a security camera is its visibility to intruders, deterring them from breaking in.

Cameras have become so common and people are so used to them, that instead of being obvious and unattractive, they have become close to "invisible". People don't pay attention to things they expect and see as common.

How will they be wired? How will they be accessed?

I had some ring cameras a few years ago and they could be finicky and need resetting once in a while. I now have permanent cameras wired for power and internet, and they never have any issues.

Do a ring doorbell to the immediate left of the door and it should cover that front area quite well. Then add other cameras that cover the sides of the property.

Hi ajsmama! First off, let me say that I think your kitchen is going to look wonderful once you are finished. I haven't read every single response so someone may have mentioned this already. Have you thought of adding a different light above your sink to add interest and, perhaps, draw attention away from those things you don't particularly like? In our new house, we have a similar set up to yours in that the window over the sink is between two sets of cabinets. We opted not to have any kind of connecting piece. We also opted not to have crown (1) because we were going for a very simplistic/craftsman style and (2) budget constraints just did not allow for it at the time. However, we've since come to the conclusion that we DO want to add a very simple crown when we are able to save up for it. It just adds so much character! With our window, we chose a mini pendant light that matches the ones from our island. I really like the look and I get lots of compliments about it. As for WTs, I hung a valance there and I also intend to put a roman shade behind it just to be able to pull down for privacy and for when the sun is shining in too brightly. We already have it, it is just a matter of actually getting it put up there! I'll post a picture. It's definitely not the best picture but I dropped my camera a couple of months ago while it was on and now it doesn't work. I've definitely got to get some more up-to-date pics loaded. Anyway, whatever you do, I'm sure your kitchen will be lovely!

Love that fabric and can't wait to see the shades in your breakfast room... They will finish it with a lovely softness! The reason I think you need curtains in your Maine house is that the room is crazily proportioned and has so many disparate elements it is a big jumble. Different windows, on the same wall, no regularity to the size or placement of them throughout the room, several woods and all those blue fabrics you're planning to use in pillows and cushions and chair seats may make it even more higgeldy piggledy. You need a unifying principle in that room...maybe yards of unlined white muslin banded in blue grosgrain at the hems and leading edges...if white, hang them on mahogany or walnut finish faux bamboo rods tho. Or swath the room in a toile--- there are plenty of American toiles and you might even find some of whaling ships or clippers, how cool would that be, and use it everywhere, curtains, upholstery, etc. Anyway, I have given my opinion twice so I guess that's my four cents :-)

We are so close to finish if they just get to it. They would need less than a week, again if they get to it. I told them if they get it done, I will pay on the spot. They will be paid sooner that way than going through a collection agency. Guessing they were bluffing. I can't imagine they are that stupid. Or they made some costly mistakes that they can't fix that I don't know about. I don't know what the contract says in details. I think it is pretty standard. I am guessing the contract can't address the gray area, like what is considered "consulting" and whether you can charge your client when you weren't clocking. In some ways, I am not worried. They made many costly mistakes so far and I picked up the bills not to hold back progress arguing. They are well documented. I will push to get them reimbursed if they push. That will be expensive for them. @Keepthefaith MIGirl I am practically doing the GM job myself. The contractor isn't communicating properly to the subs. I told him what they need to bring to finish the job. The GM didn't pass it on and the sub shows up without the parts. It is hard enough to get him out once. The finishing carpenters were here and they were twidling their thumb for hours because the supply isn't here. This happens again and again. The painter said they had to come back 5 times because the site wasn't ready for them. Now that I am here, I get to talk to subs. They are all nice, fun to talk to. I don't mind taking it over rather than trying to talk through someone who loses half of what I said on the way to subs. And they want to get paid for consulting! In my mind, they don't have a case.

@T_Wag Oh, thank you for showing me. Those are gorgeous. I'm glad it worked out. Yes, I would seal them if you want to protect them from oily hand build up, (which could be a nice patina, but you have worked hard on those!) I originally wanted to wax my antique doors, but I think I told you before that the wax (as did some of the white stain options) pulled tannins (or old stain deep in pores) and turned purple. And the wax then was tough to sand out, since it gets so absorbed. UGH. Even WB acrylic and urethanes changed the color too much. So I used one coat Bona Natural sealer. It changed the color only by mere hint, and then one coat Bona Mega. I brushed it on with a sponge brush. Used 400 grit to knock down the raised grain. But I didn't sand deeply, of course. (IF you use just the mega, then it will pull tannins. The sealer stops that. The sealer might work alone, but the mega was a coat of extra.) You can use matte if you really want it to look like wood, but I used satin. Again, test it first. You could test wax, too, to see if you like that (white or natural). Maybe yours won't turn purple. @ghatta Rubbing alcohol (hand sanitizer) often works on anything that denatured alcohol will remove, but it works better than DA because it is thicker and you can lay plastic wrap over it to keep it from evaporating. That gives it time to do its thing. Plus, it is cheaper. It works best on some antique milk paints and antique shellacs. Infact, it was the only thing that removed the milk paint from one of my doors, though I had to give it a few rounds. Nothing else budged it. It will not work on varnish and newer stains or poly, or at least not as well. Another off-brand method that can work, (but can damage the wood, so test it first,) is oven cleaner on certain urethanes.

@chispa may I ask what brand cameras and how do you access them? I'm assuming they have hardwire and internet each correct? We're leaning that way for long term flexibility. I don't need a camera crapping out while we're out of town with weird stuff going on.

We have hard wired Axis cameras. We were advised by local police that thieves have been jamming the wireless ones. They were not inexpensive but have performed flawlessly for 4 years. My son is a cyber security expert and did not want us to have cameras made in China. We access them through an app on our phones.

@earthlyepicure, yes they are hardwired and connected to internet. All the wiring goes into a hard drive that is accessed from an app and can be viewed on phones, tablets and house TVs. We have a complicated whole house video and audio system. I don't know the brand of the cameras. The hub/hard drive is by IC Realtime and app shows up as ICRSS Pro.

The one thing I don't like is that it records based on motion, but does not send out alerts. Our doorbell camera is wired through our separate alarm system and that one does send out notifications for motion and doorbell presses.

In hindsight, we should of had the alarm guy take care of the cameras, instead of letting the audio/video guy do it. The alarm app is by alarm.com but branded with my local alarm company's name. Doorbell camera also from alarm.com. I really like their app/system and would look for a local company that uses that brand to run all your cameras. There are probably DIY options too.

The main thing, if your parents are gone part of the year, is to have a cellular connection and battery back-up in case someone, or bad weather, cuts the internet and power lines.
