Forcing Freesia and Ranunculus Bulbs Indoors
Comments (4)Kevin I didn't know they needed light to form buds! Thank you for this. In my situation the light came with the area they are planted in. BTW, I planted a lot of freezias I got from a Big Box at 75% off. I plant them above hyacinths in urn like pots outside. After I planted, we got 10 inches of snow. There was no way to move them inside and the snow was such a surprise here near Dallas, TX that I forgot about them and didn't cover the pots. I thought these "delicate" bulbs would be lost but this weekend I saw signs of green foliage and the hyacinths are leaping out now, so they pushed several bulbs out too. They are firm and healthy. Guess they are tougher than I thought. Thanks again c...See MoreForcing Muscari - need info
Comments (2)I love blue grape hyacinths. I have tons of them. The first year I had them I was very suprised when their leaves appeared in fall and stayed until spring - under snow and during deep freeze. I even started to like them less because mice used to make nests under leaves. If your bulbs started to sprout, take pots outside - you will not be able to stop the Nature. I am not sure if they will produce flowers this spring (if bulbs were pre-chilled), but next year - no doubts....See MoreWant info on forcing grape hyacinth (muscari)
Comments (3)As you can see, not many people seem to force muscari. I've never done them, but here's the info from my Bulb Forcer's Guide (you should get this book if you plan to do any serious forcing of any bulb): Muscari Blue Spike requires a minimum of 15 cold weeks, and Early Giant 14 cold weeks (45-48F). They should be potted up in a well-drained, ph6-7 potting medium. After the cold period, they'll require about 3 weeks to bloom at 58F average night temp. You can speed that up or slow it down by adjusting the growing temp, although going from 45F to anything over 60F in under a week could induce bud blasting. Comments (17)I would like to learn what bulbs (other than paperwhites) are suitable for forcing over just touching water and colored glass/ pebbles. I saw a pot with rocks for sale at BJ's Wholesale Club - it had two large purplish bulbs included - but no directions, or clues to the bulbs on the package - or in it. I am tempted to go back and buy it - just to let it grow and see what they are! I went to an open house this week - where the hostess had placed lots of paperwhites over pebbles in very tall glass vases of different sizes and shapes all over her house....The height of the vase supported the flowers as they grew and they looked beautiful with large lacy gold bows on the vases. I thought that the arrangement was very clever - as my problem with paperwhites over the years has always been their tendancy to fall over when they are fully mature. Any ideas for other bulb choices? Thanks!...See Moremazerolm_3a
