Paint color suggestions for 2006 kitchen needed

The kitchen gets the morning light from the east but is dark by mid afternoon without the lights on. The walls are BM Northampton Putty and I’m pretty sure the doors and trim are BM Wheeling Neutral. I’m thinking of just painting the trim and doors BM Cloud White to brighten things up. I prefer to use BM paint but would consider SW. Keeping the wall decor. Looking for specific paint color suggestions for wall and/or trim.

Do you want to stick with neutrals or try a color? That would help us give suggestions.

I think lighting is an issue. Do you have under cabinet lighting? If not, that would help a lot. Maybe also a decorative (but functional) light over your sink if you don’t have one already.

I do have a light over the sink and under cabinet lighting in one area. I don't always want to put the lights on so much during the day so wondering if a different pain color would help. as for paint color, I'm open to any and all suggestions. As you can see I have the dark cherry cabinets and the third photo pretty accurately shows the floor tile color.

Thank you all for your suggestions. I will def. look into these colors. My last house had many 'traditional colors' mustards, yellows, reds, tan and I am looking to try something different this time around. I am inspired by Candice Olsen who meshes modern with traditional. She once did a white kitchen where on one wall she put a dark brown and silver metallic damask wallpaper. I looked at Elephant Breath (SW I think), Revere Pewter by BM, and couple others. They looked just great when put on the horizontal surface; the moment I turned the painted samples vertically as kitchen cabinets would ultimately be, they lost their warmth and seemed much cooler and dull, in any light-inside the house and in the full sun outside. I ended up looking at 14(!) samples taking them around the house and checking them in different lights and times of a day. In the end, I went with a custom color that I happened to stumble upon in our carpenter's shop. It was a formula that was mixed by some designer for a very high end kitchen in Malibu..It turned out to be wonderful. The cabinets are installed and make me happy each time I look at them. But it's not gray. I don't even know what I should call this color. I just know I like it lol. Get samples; you never know how a color would behave until you try it. It will be tiresome; but ultimately you will be pleased with your choice.

I too have oak cabinets and after trying a soft yellow and a green, I finally ended up with Behr Raffia Cream. It's pretty with the oak and it looks like it may work well with the counters as well. The thing that would make me concerned about adding color to your walls is that it may highlight the contrast between the cabinets and counter even more. When I had the yellow up it was pretty but it wasn't comfortable to be in. I like this color so much, I extended it into the living room as well. Here's a pic of our kitchen so you can see how it looks with the cabinets, I actually used a darker color with a slight tint of green in it for the ceiling.

You can't use a cool white with those cabinets, you need a warm white. Look at BM Simply White and/or SW Alabaster. You can get peel and stick samples from Samplize.com, or paint sample swatches on your walls. Alternatively, you can paint samples on a board or scrap piece of drywall so you can move it around to look at it on all four walls. Be sure to paint two coats when sampling and hold the board vertically against your floors and counters since that's the way the color will be next to them. Sometimes it helps to paint a section with primer to look at your samples against so you're not distracted by the existing color. Look at the samples at different times of the day and when it's cloudy and sunny. The way a color looks is so dependent upon the lighting and direction your windows face. There is no way to know what is going to work without trying a couple. You can paint the ceiling the same color, or use what the paint store calls "ceiling white" which is very neutral. Ceilings tend to pick up tint from the surroundings.

I think a warm white would be nice, but honestly it’s all going to look flat and greyed out if you don’t have natural light. I lived in a house where most of the rooms had this issue so I feel your pain! Better lighting is the answer. I usually leave my under cabinet lighting on all day. You can have it all on one switch with a dimmer.

Wheeling Neutral is a medium tan, so that is not what is on the woodwork.

It is Wheeling Neutral. it's hard to get the colors looking true with a phone camera and the lighting.

Better lighting needs to happen - paint will not make a room feel brighter. A color that works with the tile is important. What you have now is a tad green but it’s not bad. A semi flush fixture in the center of the room and over the sink as well as undercabinet LED tape light under all cabinets would work wonders.

Yes it’s very dark and there is little contrast between the trim and the wall. I wanted this look in 2006 but I’m thinking I want a more traditional trim look like with BM Cloud White.
