Theme Garden-'Lake/Beach'-plant suggestions?
Comments (7)@duluthinbloomz4 I know I have at least three types aside from my Dream Queen, because three are HUGE greens, one is small green and one is varigated. I'm going to a local hosta farm this weekend to try to locate some "different" varieties, and relocating my plain jane green and varigated ones to a different spot. I have a Dream Queen I need to plant, but I want stuff like Brave Attempt, White Feather, Blue Ivory and Stained Glass...anything but the solid greens! Although I *might* get a Niagara Falls because it looks so neat. So, on the theme garden front, so far I have: Sea Shell Cosmos Yellow Sand Coreopsis Sand Love Grass "Nautical mix" petunias Lake Currants Cottage pinks (Dianthus) Summer Breeze Hosta Beach Music Day Lily Great Lakes gold hosta Coastal Mist bearded iris Toy Boat dwarf Iris Beach Dance iris Ship Shape Iris Lake Effect day lily Lakeside Pebbles Hosta Aye Captian day lily Great Lakes Gladiola Sea Lavender Sea holly Queen O The Lakes rose Sea thrift Rosa rugosa/beach rose The area is probably only about 6' deep by 10' or so wide so I won't need a HUGE amount of plants. I plan on making a list, then researching zones, heights, sun/shade requirements and bloom times to create a garden plan. This one won't be going in until next year for sure, although I might pick up some plants here and there as I come across them....See MorePlease help me pick curtains (and other decor tips) for my office
Comments (14)Hello! This is awesome information, thank you all so much!! ttodd - so you used fabric glue instead of sewing? Was it messy? Do you think it will hold over time? I was thinking of sewing it as I have never used the glue. charlieinnj - wow! That looks great! I'd like to try this as well. Sleek/comtempory...yes this is exactly what I am going for. Yes, the quilt wall hanging may not work! LOL! I'll have to break that to dh. Ok, about the fabric repeating exactly...I wonder if one 84" or 96" curtain panel will be enough fabric to accomplish this? This is a curtain panel that I found, not fabric. blondepegasus - yes, I will have the yellow ribbon on the curtains, the yellow in the fabric wall hangings, yellow pillows on the chair. I'm so excited to get started on these projects!! Thanks!! Elaine...See MoreNeed help with guest bedroom/animal-tropical theme
Comments (17)Now if you use British Colonial style you can mix it all together in one room. Remember the British colonies ranged from Hong Kong, India, Australia, parts of Africa, the Carribean, Canada, the US, among others. I found this info: The Victorian era of the mid to late 19th century saw the British extend their empire around the world, from Singapore to East Africa, from India to the British West Indies. With them, they brought their language, their ideas on government, their custom of afternoon tea, and their furniture and designs. The Victorian Era was a rather formal time and the British, although they enjoyed traveling to the distant outposts of the Empire, didn't want to forego the comforts of home. They brought the solid and sturdy furniture designs of England and adapted them to the tropics. Along the way, they adapted Asian and African motifs into those traditional designs. This mange became British Colonial style and it is easily recognized by its sturdy, yet sometimes fanciful pieces, of teak and mahogany as well as its use of rattan, leather, and animal prints. Hardwoods, such as teak and mahogany, were particularly suited to the humid climates of the Empire. Unlike softer woods, like pine, that tended to warp in the tropical humidity, these woods stood up to the most extreme conditions and were readily available in most of the colonies. Often furniture was carved by native craftsmen using British designs, and you'll frequently find little flourishes of Asian, Caribbean, or African art, intermixed with the original carving. If one looks carefully at that mahogany four-postered bed, you'll notice, perhaps, a carved pineapple atop the posts. The Colors and Prints of British Colonial Style Both exotic and practical, British Colonial design emphasized muted colors, such as browns, beiges, and straw, in sharp contrast to the flowery prints popular at that time in the motherland. The colonial palette reflects the tropical lushness of nature, which, whether in the West Indies, Africa, or Asia, was never far away. One of the hallmarks of British Colonial design is the contrast of hard sturdy wood with the bright sunshine and cheerful colors of the tropics. Animal prints, Indian sari fabrics, and detailed and realistic botanical prints added interest and emphasized the colonists' fascination with their adopted lands....See MoreNeed help to design a Beach themed bedroom
Comments (3)Light woods, rattan or wicker, linen sheer curtains, bamboo curtain rods, all contribute to a beach-y feel. Turquoise/coral/white, red/white/blue, periwinkle/lavender/sand, are all combinations that evoke a beach. But as frenchtarragon says, without any photos, it's difficult to help....See MoreBeverlyFLADeziner
