Comments (36)I read a design book about this topic recently (I don't remember the name). It was about the psychology of design and contained no photos. It said that there are two competing desires in our genes. One is for expansive spaces reflecting our need to explore and roam. The second is for smaller spaces reflecting the caves and protections our ancestors craved. The perfect space combines both. For example, our living room has 8-foot ceilings and isn't too large, but all the windows have expansive views down the valley. You get the feeling of space, but are in a protective environment. We have lived in all sorts of houses-- a 1927 Tudor, a 1990 cookie-cutter vaulted builder special, townhouses, apartments, a 1885 Victorian with 14-foot ceilings--but this modest 1970s ranch with three quirky add-ons is our favorite. No one else has one like it, people comment on how warm it is, and nothing beats an amazing view. Our Victoria house was stunning but always cold....See MoreHas anyone else gone down the rabbit hole that is Ancestry.com?
Comments (47)My mother's parent's both immigrated from Italy - small villages in the Italian Alps not far from the Swiss border. My mother's parents also immigrated from northern Italy, Piemonte to be be more exact -- one from a small village north of Torino, and one from a small city (they met in Los Angeles). I made contact with her father's family, or rather a cousin in Torino searched and found us in California. I visited, and went with my cousin to see where the family originated. We went to the municipio, and for a few centesimi, obtained a copy of my grandfather's birth certificate. They still had huge ledgers with handwritten entries for births going back centuries -- the small number of people living there probably made storage of the ledgers possible. My father's father returned to his town in Toscana in his last years; I visited his grave so I have his date of death. I wrote the province and asked for information on his birth and death certificates, and surprisingly received an answer. I qualify to apply for Italian citizenship based on my father's father, or at least I did the last I checked, but other circumstances tossed a roadblock and long detour in my path. With the current rise of the Italian far right, I'm not sure I want to take the chance of reliving the days of fascists brawling in the streets....See MoreLet's go down the rabbit hole!
Comments (14)Bill and everyone, I too went down that Rabbit hole and helped lined the pockets of the inventors. I wonder what kind of high life they are living? What a smart bunch of people? Wonder if 'the shark tank ' people would of hopped on board when they first started? Would you believe I have a bottle that is so old I can't open it. As if it is glued shut. What is weird that I see this stuff fly off the vendors carts at orchid shows...I am not kidding. That and leaf shine. I always wondered if singing to them makes them grow better too? If it makes anyone feel any better. the last time I sand while watering mine they all heeled over. I am using a fresh bottle, yip, guilty as charged again I bought at the last years orchid show that a orchid growers swore by it that is works, he was selling it...lol I do know that a heck of a lot better light, humidity, better watering practices is making for fine roots on my plants, but not sure if it has to due with Superthrive now. Confused..lol So what do we give good root development to? Good growing practices? better mix? Better lighting? Better smarts on what makes them grow better? Of snake oil? Or all of the above? Hum? Guess I'll never know( Mike...See MoreBest Laundry Powder - it’s a rabbit hole!
Comments (71)John, I used steam a couple of times and it faded my clothes so I did not look into it further. I noticed that during the Allergiene cycle the steam is used in the begiging of the cycle with very little water before the clothes are actually washed. It raises the temp very high for 20 min and then fills with lower temp water for the actual wash. When I have a load of whites I will run a steam wash and monitor to see how it works in other cycles and report back. However I do not think it is a sub for a true hot wash for whites and it is too high a temp for darks. I read in this forum that for darks some people like the perm press cycle since it has more water and the temps are a bit better than normal. For my whites I used to do the whites cycle but it is not hot enough and now I am switching to xhot or sanitary washes. Still experimenting. I am still learing what cycles work well. My normal right now (winter) is consistently at 28C....See Morejackowskib
