Any ideas what to do with empty space above window ??

Hello
Here is have my backsplash that I plan to put floating shelves in as I have drawn in a photo and a black vent hood above the stove . My question is what to do with the space above the window of any ? I would like to read everyone’s insight ! Below the countertop will go a dishwasher if anyone was curious and I plan to use brass hardware for the cabinets that I have under the island . All of the countertop , island, and backsplash are the same .

You might have run the backspash up the entire space.

Now you could paint the wall black behind the shelves and above the window:

A sconce over the window - brass to match the hardware.

Possibly black and brass together. I am not sure if it would be too heavy with the black hood but it’s something to consider. And see if you can find a sconce that compliments the style of your other lighting fixtures.

Most pictures show multiple sconces but here’s an example of a single one over a sink, like you would have.

If you didn't do a light, I would leave it as is. After the shelves are up, see how you feel about the space and if it needs anything. (Use some black items on the shelves to help balance the hood.)

I also think a roman shade in the window would look great.

Rather than focus on the wall of windows you might first paint the walls a mid-tone or darker which will do wonders at warming up the room. You may not then need to dress the windows at all. You have very valid reasons for leaving them uncovered. Window coverings for that expanse of windows will be very costly and there are many other ways of warming up the room. If you are interested in having plants to soften the space you might consider a couple of Dieffenbachia as they are fairly inexpensive when small and grow quite quickly. Of course there are warnings about the toxicity but I've never had kids or pets eat them and I have read that warning is over-rated. I've had one grow to over 8' tall and seen them much taller than that. They actually do better in lower light situations and mine did well in a north-east window. Whatever plant you choose you could put it on a pedestal when small for greater impact. I'm not a fan of accent walls so wouldn't advise painting the fireplace wall a different color. Too often accent walls don't work as intended for interest and I think there is enough going on in this large room so that keeping all walls the same color would be best.

In the top picture, is the area off to the left meant to be the dining area? The sliding glass door to the deck is next to it so I'd like to still keep it fairly open. How often do use this sliding glass door if it has a curtain hanging over it? Is there another place you can feed the dog? If it were my house, which has lots of books : ), I'd be tempted to place several bookshelves along the wall, between the windows and to the right of the window at right. And a fabulous Persian/Oriental rug in front.

I think the problem is that the ugliest thing in the room (the TV) has been made into the focal point on that wall by being centered. The pictures with their gold frames don't really add anything and only create a distraction because they are clashing with the black TV. I would suggest losing the accent chair and moving the TV to one side and adding a tall plant. You could alternatively hang beside the TV two pictures in black frames, one over the other, for balance. The accent chair is in an awkward place in the corner and should be moved somewhere else, and the pictures would look better on another wall where they can stand on their own. Also, the scale of the relatively small TV looks funny on such a large piece of furniture. You might consider either replacing with a larger TV to balance out the size of the furniture it is on, or put the existing TV on a smaller table/cabinet. Hanging the TV would add some height and provide space for the family photos underneath.

The OP said "open space under window". She means that shelf! The dust collector. OP, my sister had one of those and had a decorator fix it up. It was a beautiful spot, but a chore when it needed dusting. They had the surface finished out in hardwood that matched the stairs.

Consider adding 2 sconce lights. One over window and one over the shelves. Both at same height. Is there no room on right of stovetop to have a side splash there?

Hi. If I were you, I would paint the wall behind the sink....would look nice painted Sage green, a nice shade of blue, a grayish blue. You could put a valance above the window and hang some cafe curtains on that window. You could put a small plant shelf above the window and put some small plants up there or some decorative items.

The back splash material will be an issue I suppose but I would leave the wall, hang a woven shade high against the ceiling above the window.

Sorry but shelving or not that backsplash should have been the same on both sides and the range placement is awful . Why did you not extend the cabinets on the left and put the range there.? The space above the window is not an issue .

Sorry to be so blunt, but the range butting up against the wall and so close to the sink is a larger issue than what to do on the wall above the window. Can you move either appliance to the island?
