Please name some Mid-Priced Furniture Brands Still In Business

Wow! From the last time I purchased furniture (15 years ago) to now so many manufacturers have gone out of business. I would really appreciate it if you would tell me a brand you consider mid-priced like Broyhill, Klaussner, Stanley, etc... Of those I think only Stanley is still in business. Also - does anyone have a contact with an independant upholsterer? I had one in NC that could build anything years ago, when I last purchased furniture. That family of upholsterers/furniture makers appear to be out of business too. Thanks in advance!!

Maybe start by explaining how you define mid-priced? These days Stanley might be mid-priced, but the quality of what they produce is not the same as what they sold 15+ years ago.

I need a sofa not over $2000 - for an example of what I consider mid-priced - probably purchased in High Point or Hickory, NC area, where I used to furniture shop to save money and intend to go back to as there is not much selection where I live and since I am going to NC around the holidays anyway. I will not resort to Ashley and Rooms to Go. I hear the worst reviews of both and I didn't like anything there. I have a lot left to buy; 2 sofas, ottoman, end tables, 2 chairs, dining table and 8 chairs, sofa tables, etc.. Unfortunately, my budget per item is not going to be able to be that high. I can't get the nicer brands. I'll bargain hunt in the clearance centers in NC, but I would like to know today's mid-priced brands. I considered Klaussner mid-priced, but they went out of business too. No Braxton Culler sofa for me. I've seen a lot of those near me $3000 and up. I wish my independent upholsterer/furniture maker in NC had not closed. They were great, my upholstered furniture lasted 15 years, and they very reasonable. I'd love to find more like them. If I showed them a picture they could make it and not break the bank. Thank you for sending me your information on what you purchased. Unfortunately, I'm betting it is all more expensive than I can afford now. I'll check on Century though. I've heard of them, but not seen any in the area I live in. Maybe I can find who showcases Century in NC.

Back in 2005, we purchased a Hancock and Moore Leather sectional. We had an HM recliner and knew it was superior quality. A neighbor here in CA told us she and her husband and flown to NC to furnish their home and that the majority of the furniture was from Boyles. She highly recommended them. My best friend, who lives in NC and said he thought they were good too. We worked with a rep in the Hickory store, all over the phone, once we had researched exactly what we wanted and had sat on the very same model in our hometown. We priced the same sectional and leather grade at the most competitive furniture dealer in the SF Bay Area. The total cost for everything, including shipping was close to $8,000 (no tax) at the time. Our local dealer was $500 more and of course, tax would be included here. So we took the plunge and went with Boyles, never setting foot in their store. The sectional and foot rest/table arrived on time as promised and we were very happy with our purchase. About five or six years ago, our cushions were wearing down and we knew HM would send us new ones, at no extra charge, if necessary. When I called Boyles, they asked me for the order number/receipt etc., and I explained I could not find it. I told them that the tag number attached to the sectional should ID enough for them to trace it to me. But, they claimed they had gone through a computer conversion and sales made before the current time, when I was speaking to them, had all been lost in the conversion. I felt like that was,extremely poor business and thought I'd find the bill of sale, but never did. i don't remember calling HM at the time, but I should have, even though I didn't have any paperwork to back up my purchase. But I'm sure the tag number would tell them that the order went through Boyles. So here we are in 2017 and I'm pursuing this again. Unfortunately, HM doesn't have an email system to make any specific requests, just enough for me to supply contact info. I let our SF Bay Area competitor know what has happened and even though I didn't make the purchase through them, they are willing to go to bat for me and contact HM! I do have great rapport with them and have made some past purchases with them, as has my brother. While I can't say what the outcome will be, I bet Boyles wouldn't do that for a customer! They certainly blew me off, after I had made the most expensive furniture purchase we ever made, with them! Hopefully HM will come through for us. Had I fone through safer route with our dealer out here and spent the extra $500, it would have been worth it! Lesson learned!

Lindsay offers the Earthwise window which is pretty solid. I'd probably prefer it over the others that you have listed. How is this room used? IE, is it conditioned year round, do you run AC in summer, etc. The reason that I ask is the 366 glass is not the best choice for most climates other than those that are hot and sunny. That said, if you do not heat the room during winter and you do cool it in summer, it would be a good choice. Alternatively, if you do heat it, you are better off with a 272 which I'm sure that they offer, if not even a 180 in the event that you typically keep the room "open-air" during the summer months. The reasoning behind my recommendation is that those glass packages will offer major variances in solar heat gain, so you should really customize that choice to how you use the room.

I have to agree with russmahogany. As a cabinetmaker I would NEVER go back to a customer and say "Opps I made a mistake on my pricing." It just wouldn't happen unless the customer made a request to change the contract. I typically estimate a job; labour costs on a project are double to triple the material costs such as what you detail in your picture from PB. If there's a lot tricky measuring, building and installing, well naturally the price goes up. Other than that I follow the 2x or 3x rule in "estimating". Besides the builder won't be out a lot of money, maybe $2,000. They should swallow their pride for making the mistake and do the best job they possibly could do "without" putting the customer in an uncomfortable position like you are in now. If they do good work, their loss will be made up easily. As a customer, I would hold them to the contract and take them to court if I didn't want to write off the downpayment. If they do a good job, and knowing the predicament they fell into I might even help promote their business to assist in recovering their loss. Woodwork Safely, Jim Barry

@Wes Hunt I believe Shiloh does an industry-standard post-catalyzed conversion varnish, so hopefully the finish will be more durable for you than Kemp would have been. As I'm sure you're aware, there are several different levels of pricing within the lines offered by W. W. Wood Products, Inc., Shiloh's parent company. Shiloh for some reason hasn't amassed many reviews around the web at the time of this writing outside of those on Houzz, but there are several threads here at Houzz that do discuss Shiloh's offerings and warranty fulfillment in depth. One of the things I've noticed is that people who went with the less expensive lines wished they had upgraded to the top Shiloh offering, and for people who did receive defective pieces, it was sometimes an issue getting satisfactory warranty service. If you are working with a reputable sales rep, hopefully they would take care of any issues you had promptly. Plenty of people have been very pleased with their Shiloh cabinetry. The tolerances on Shiloh's inset styles aren't as tight as you'd see from more expensive brands like Christopher Peacock or Kennebec according to some reviewers familiar with a wide range of brands, but for many people who want to save and yet still want that inset look, Shiloh does just fine for them. Of course, as you're aware, inset is not the only style Shiloh offers. I hope your project goes smoothly. Thanks for allowing the Houzz community to have input into your research process.

we have a Flexsteel sofa and armchair which have both held up really well for the past 7 or so years. Rowe and England are two more companies which have a good reputation for quality at a mid price range.

I’ll check out Greenfront! I don’t know if there is one near where we are going to be or not, but I don’t mind going out of my way!

I’ll check out Masterfield too!

Flexsteel is nice. I know Rowe too. England is new to me. I’ll check it out!

Yes, to Flexsteel, specifically the Digby line, using the Kashmira fabric. Research Kashmira...it is a miracle fabric. Looks like leather or suede (not microfiber), is practically indestructible, and the colors are gorgeous.

Often there will be a sofa on the floor. If you like the color, chances are you will get it for floor model price.

^ As a matter of fact, we have the Digby sofa and chair.. especially like fact that they have the tight back as opposed to pillow back ( which always seem to get squashed down or lose support). Kitty likes it too, lol

oh, also… if you decide on Flexsteel, they also had an option (if you special order) to get extra firm cushions. That would probably extend life of sofa even longer. I didn’t realize that until after we got ours

Arhaus. You can occassionally get very nice clearance deals.

I don’t have anything upholstered from there, but I have been disappointed in the quality of 3 tables I bought from Arhaus.

I like Lee for upholstery.
