Pruning 2014 - Coming into a new Season for many.
Comments (15)Hello Everyone! We had mentioned that pruning is best done when the tree is at peak energy levels to help produce branching, growth and more roots if pruning. This is done usually in the late spring for me, but I was anxious to prune one or a couple of my trees. I did prune one hard and I documented the process, so I will post. It was one month ago that I pruned this tree. I sealed the ends with wood glue and let it sit in a sunny window. Today, I inspected my tree and this is what I found!! It is a sign.. I was nervous about pruning at this time, but I had some soft limbs on this tree and it needed to be addressed before any other problem could appear. I'll post on Ricks thread.. That way we can see the pics.. Have a great day!! Laura...See MoreNew roses for this season
Comments (4)Hi My Sightsaver has had a few blooms,a bit disappointing as I love the fragrance. It may be better next season having grown in a bit. Mine is only a few months old. I have had a sensational year with First Prize. I moved it into a better spot during last winter and it has doubled in height and produced fantastic blooms. I dont have any of the others you mentioned. Another beauty has been Claire rose and Blue Moon. Fionas Wish and Just Joey have also been great. Having a bit of trouble with black spot.I have to check all the time. I guesss its the weather for it. cheers...See MoreHow many seasons before your New Dawn took off?
Comments (7)The general rule of climbers is to give them 3-4 years before they really come into a reliable bloom cycle and mature, though you can get blooms before that. You want climbers in particular to put down roots, and I'm happy if my climbers survive and grow cane for the first couple of years. Just keep the main canes tied to something so they grow horizontally, so the rose can grow laterals off that main cane that will be the blooming ones. If the rose looks healthy, be patient with it. FWIW, I've tried 3 times to get New Dawn established here in zone 5 and I've never been successful. I had one plant last in less than ideal conditions about 3 years and it was never more than knee high. Two other tries were grafted plants that quickly cankered out and died. New Dawn is promoted as a tough-as-nails rose for our cold zones, but I think there are a lot of better climbers out there. Still, where it's happy it's a lovely climber and if it's really happy it'll eat its supports, neighboring shrubs, and small children for lunch. Comments (52)Lovely roses! Sorry you lost your Ball Gown, Christian! Never fun when roses never take off then die. I agree with PDXRobertZ8 about marketing photos. Would be nice if they would also show what the flowers look like open. I don't think I've seen an ugly rose bud, but some roses when open aren't so great. Would also be awesome if they would also mention how long the blooms last, even if it can be variable. Alas, I'm off onto wishful thinking lala land now......See Moreoursteelers 8B PNW
