Thermador ProHarmony 30" Gas Range vs Wolf 30" Gas Range

Hi,

We are trying to decide between these two ranges. We love the look of the Wolf with the red knobs but seems like it is even more basic (4 burners instead of 5, no preheating indicator) than the Thermador? Are there any reasons to choose the 30" Wolf over the Thermador other than looks?

Have you looked under the hood?

5 Burner Thermador: Back burners are 8000 BTU. Front right burner is 15k, front left is 18k and center burner is a puny 10k. Makes no sense to me that the small front right & left burners are more powerful than the center burner. The center burner is where you would place a really big pan & it has less power than the smaller front burners.

Fitting that 5th burner on the Thermador comes at the expense of sacrificing the burner real estate of the other 4 burners.

The Wolf has three 15k burners and one 9200 burner. And space for large pots on all 4 burners.

I would not even consider the 30" 5 burner Thermador. Because of how the BTUs are distributed among the burners and absolutely not because the left and right 4 burners are small in space. (Burner real estate was the Big Reason that I left mass market consumer ranges behind and went with a pro style. (Wolf). With that 5 burner model, Thermador is repeating sins of the past, IMO.

You buy any appliance for how you will use it. I have always thought Wolf was overrated and over priced but the price is only one part of this. Think about what you need from a range then go get that one there are 100s to choose from go shopping ideally at a good appliance store that has knowledgable staff to help you.

FYI, just heard a little more info on the upgrades coming on the Pro Grands. In additon to the 22k burner (I am told only one will be 22k, the others probably 18k, but don't know for sure), they are apparently adding (1) soft-close function on doors, (2) an LCD display panel of some sort, and (3) the interior of the doors will apparently be entirely glass backed, no porcelain there. All in all, unless you need a bigger oven capacity, really prefer the look, or already have deep counters, I don't think the changes are compelling enough that I would pick a Grand over a Harmony...but then again, haven't seen them yet, so I could be surprised. All this information is essentially thrid hand, mind you, so take it with a grain of salt.

I'm probably going to get the 3" trim kit, but wait until my Visa card has recovered a bit. I HAVE resolved the issue of whether it's needed by calling Thermador directly. Here's the scoop: the range must be 12" from a combustible (e.g., drywall) surface. However, it can be placed flush against a tiled wall without a trim kit because tile is not combustible. If a lower trim kit is available, I'll let everyone know. On the appliance forum someone indicated that installing anything other than Thermador-approved would void the warranty. HTH. The PH hood is 11", 600 cfm. I believe mine vents to outside. I'm not particularly a greasy messy frying kind of cook, and rarely used the former POS. Haven't yet tried the grill option. PS My range is beautiful, and roey and arc, yours are/will be too! I'm still trying to get the hang of cooking with convection.

I just got a 36" Monogram which I love. It replaced a 30" Thermador. I dont know about their 48" but the oven of my thermador was very shallow which I hated, the oven capacity of my monogram is much deeper, and I really disliked the simmer on my Thermador, which I think they have on all their ranges but you could double check. The flame goes on and off. which I didnt find worked well. The Monogram gets down really low, much lower than the Thermador ever did.

I think you are mistaken about the Wolf on this feature. This is from Wolf Gas Range Use and Care Guide:

To set the oven temperature, press and turn the oven control knob counterclockwise to the desired temperature. The oven indicator light illuminates and preheat begins. Once preheat is complete, the oven indicator light is no longer illuminated. The light will cycle on and off as more heat is required to maintain the set temperature.

How much do you really use the stove? I have found that I rarely use more than one burner at a time and other than when I do canning in the fall, I never use more than 2 burners. I have so many other cooking options between air frying, deep frying, grill and smoker and slow cooker and pressure cooker, sous vide. . .

The Wolf does have the iconic red knobs that tells everyone that walks into your kitchen that you spent a lot of money on the stove. It will not make your food taste any better.

I agree with Patricia that you need to know how you use your stove and what you need from the stove to make a good decision.

Not everyone. I see the red knobs, I think "Oh, someone who invests in good tools. The same reaction that I have when I walk into a workshop and see Makita turquoise, Festool green... Yeh, goes without saying that quality usually costs more.

CR tested 11 "pro-style" ranges including the Wolf GR304 and Thermador Pro Harmony PRG305WH. Neither performed well enough to earn a "recommended" rating. The only "pro-style" range that earned a recommended rating was the Monogram ZGP304NTSS. In CR's tests, standard gas ranges performed better for much lower prices. The $1600 GE Profile PGS930YPFS performed as well as the $5600 Monogram and two of its burners are as powerful.

Karla did you make a decision? I am trying to decide between the same two ranges except 36" size. It feels good to have weeded out several others like Kitchenaid, which has served me well for years in my all-electric kitchen but now we will be moving to a new construction home and using propane. I like both Wolf and Thermador but am leaning toward the latter. Curious about where you are in your process.
