So not sure where to begin or explain what I am trying to accomplish to bare with me. And not sure what’s safe.

We purchased this home 6 years ago. NEVER have we used the fireplace. We wanted to change it back to wood burning . But the fireplace company that came out 3-4 years ago quoted us $8 thousand to convert it. Being that there was a hole in the masonry from the propane line that runs outside of the home. Not sure if they were trying to swindle us or not because it’s the only chimney company around us.

So we still would love to convert? Would it be something we could do ourselves possibly? I know they sell chimney caulking that could possibly plug the holes? Not sure if that’s safe.

If we can’t convert it back to wood burning … how do you work it as propane?? I am scared to death of gas/propane. Not even sure if the tank has anything in it 😂.

It looks old, and may be unsafe for wood burning. However, I am with you on the gas. I wouldnt have one in my house. Go to a shop that sells, nice looking fireplace logs, and it would be very easy to put in electric. The newer type electric, are actually very nice.

If you have a gas line to that fireplace, you need a certified gas technician to remove it and ensure it is safe. Additionally, you need to get someone to send a camera up your chimney. Old chimneys are often unsafe --- missing bits of lining, chunks of mortar, etc. It's not a DIY job.

Hello Segbrown of the Awesome Kitchen. Your kitchen contains the spirit of one of my unrealized kitchens! I have one of your same backsplash tiles, a sample, which I meant to use but the years crept by and that kitchen didn't happen. Back to your seating area. I was admiring your ottoman/table only to see it disappear in your final arrangement. As I am thinking about replacing my coffee table with such a foot-ready rest, I have to ask why you got rid of yours? Surely the feet in your house want a rest when tv watching? Do you have a gas line in the fireplace? If not, you are going to need to have that run. Usually you will need to hire a plumber to do that job. You can then you can install a gas log. If you have the gas logs on hand when the plumber runs the gas line, they can usually install them for you as well. If you post some pictures of your fireplace I can give you better advice. It’s a pretty room. The cabinet you want to paint is beautiful and appears to be in good condition. If it were mine, I would polish the wood really good to give it some luster but I would not paint it. I have a really old dresser in our bedroom that would be beautiful painted, but IMO, a lot of the pieces people are painting now are classic antiques. it ruins them so I don’t have the heart to do it. I have to agree, some pretty but simple drapery on the window will add that punch of color I think you’re looking for.

I have the same issue, except mine had an electric heating element. I’m planning on doing a high-temp clear coat on the outside, high-temp black on the inside and base, then lining the bottom with firebricks. Fingers crossed!
