Flooring for second floor hall and bedrooms
Comments (8)This is a budget thing that I thought I would really regret when we built, but I actually don't. In our bid, our builder priced our house with HW everywhere downstairs, except the master bedroom. He included HW in the upstairs hall (which is actually a really big hall, it is hard to explain, but it wraps around the entry and the bedrooms up there are pretty far from each other.) Anyway, I was adamant that I wanted the entire 1st floor to be HW, but it would be $5000 to add HW to the master, so we changed the upstairs hall to carpet, to free up the $$ to put HW in the master. You can't see from downstairs that the upstairs is carpet (our stairs are HW,) but I really thought it would be sort of cheap looking to carpet up there. Actually...it has been so nice. It is really quiet up there. We have 2 children who have their friends over all the time, and I can't imagine how LOUD it would have been with HW. Plus...with HW you have the added expense of buying all those area rugs. So far, for us, we haven't minded the carpet upstairs. It isn't even on my list of things I'd like to ultimately change!...See MoreIs this bedroom set too massive for my bedroom? (pics!)
Comments (51)Believe it or not, decent looking ceiling fans exist. On every design show I've ever seen they're the first things to be thrown out, but I have them in every bedroom. Mmm slight draft at night without the sound of floor fan... I pspent no fewer than 18 weeks looking (off and on) for a "pretty" one to go in my master. I have lived with a 4 poster bed. My experience - unless you have really high ceilings, and I'm talking like 10 ft, and a sizeable room, it will turn your space into... tiny. Once upon a time in a previous life I thought I had a big bedroom until I put a poster bed in there. I like your computer nook. I always wanted a space like that, which I could separate from the rest of the room with some romantic drapery tied back. I might force that idea on my formal dining room. :) beds/headboards coverin ga window do bother me. I don't like anything to cover a window (couch, table, or otherwise) -- but that's just me. And if it came down to a queen bed, or covering that window, sure - the window would get covered! We have single panels on our two bedroom windows, mostly because they're skinny and it looked silly to me to have two panels. If you need to cover the window, something that seems to help (at least when I've seen it done) is to pull the bed away from the wall a foot or so. Then you can go with two panels, and it looks kind of intentional instead of "didn't have space." Something else to keep in mind with blocking windows -- does the sun come directly in such that it would fade your bedding over time?...See MoreMy first renovation project! Comments (27)Cpartist - not uncommon to do in other parts of the world. People make things work with what they have and what is available. This one in particular looks fairly large and like it has the capability to at least be a one bedroom or have a small 2 bedroom one. Masoud - what is the intended purpose for the second bedroom? Is it for children or? I know my niece has a room with no window in her dad's apartment and with wallpaper it is actually a very pleasant room and at her current age she spends more time outside than in her room anyways with mainly sleeping there and when sleeping you generally close off the windows. I know in certain areas of the world egress is important, but even in the US there are areas where a window isn't required to be a bedroom. I'm from Europe and live in Texas and my old house had one that I used as an office and when I sold it I didn't list it as a bedroom even though the realtors all told me it was a valid bedroom. Although you appear to have a little more space (talking a few cm/ an ich) to add a wall between the door and the window it is still tight and the light will likely not reach into most of the bedroom in the back. So it may not be the best option, but if you want egress then it works....See MoreHelp Converting Second Floor Loft to Master Bedroom
Comments (17)I think you got better starting advice from the 2 nonPROS. The term gas chamber is so disgusting just ugh. Its on their wish list so obviously they want one, as as we debated before, contrary to your opinion, most home owners would like to have one. And Patricia, you offered nothing. If you cant or dont understand a pretty clear question, skip it and come back later. Edit: Also , dont post your entire floor plan (if you are set and ok with your floorplan) if you just want advice for your loft. There are a few people that will tear it apart in sn effort to save you from yourself....See MorePaul F.
