Homes Where Smokers Live - How Did You Get Rid of Odor?
Comments (38)cmarlin - if we keep them, I'll clean them, but no paint, I think they look pretty rich and even though old, I actually like them. I think I'll probably put in something like Silestone in a mocha color and it would look great. What will determine whether we keep them is if I can find a good match that will appropriately fit. kelpermaid, I think they painted in the house recently, though I'm not sure - going to try and find out. I know they've lived there for 6 years, so if they are the only people who smoked there in the last 25 years since it was built, at least 19yrs of it had no smokers - but not sure how bad the last 6 years have been. creekside - now you've TOTALLY confused me! In some cases, homes need to dry to the interior. Kilz will prevent that. So will some other products. A spot of Kilz here and there won't hurt anything. Rolling it on all the interior walls may promote mold growth. So, if you are going to use Kilz after cleaning with TSP or something like it, you can't paint everything?? I'm sure I'm not understanding something here - I'll try to read the info on the link you sent - maybe call the co. next week. Carol_from_NY -thanks, I think my cleaning list is growing by leaps and bounds. The way I'm going, I may have to put my mother on the top of the car and tell her to hold on to the luggage rack for the trip up I'm going to have so many supplies to take! Thanks for mentioning the steamer, I have one and wouldn't have remember to think about taking it. I've never heard about putting gum in for smells, that's a new one. I'll try ANYTHING to get the house to normal. Thanks for all you suggested. Well, at this time we are in limbo. Inspections turned up a few problems, two problems that could be major, one that definitely is and has to do with a foundation failure. I am trying to get the owners to agree to fix what's on the repair list I sent them - which isn't everything that needs to be repaired, I took on the cheaper and more easily aspects of it. Will know more next week whether the deal goes through or falls apart. Wish me luck!! Thanks again to all - everyone has been extremely helpful, and it's all appreciated! Oh, one more thing - my Mom was there during the inspection and told me they had a machine running to take the stink out and she thought it smelled better in there - was probably an ozone machine. My nose will decide (if we close on it, that is) THANKS!!!!...See MoreThe More I Get Rid Of, the Larger My House!
Comments (36)Back in the 1990s, Mobile had a recycling project that was wonderful. Actually, it was a waste materials sorting and reclaiming facility, where stuff was gradually or methodically separated and it was paying for itself. However, it was a demonstration kind of project, and it had to be approved by the city council, and eventually it was cancelled. With as much money as can be made from reclaiming metal, glass, paperboard, it would have been a great municipal plus....a department that was paying for itself. I'm not actually doing everything that I can to recycle, because it is so (a) inconvenient, (b) space consuming, (c)time consuming. B and C are part of A. Where do you keep the piles of stuff without attracting CRITTERS? Down here, it rains so much, plants grow so quickly, that a clean collection soon becomes awash in water or leaves. Then you have to take the collected items somewhere, and that means only one place in town....except there is a private facility that will buy your aluminum drink cans so you can take them there. But sorted and washed glass, clean paperboard/boxes, styrofoam/plastics can go to the Keep Mobile Beautiful collection facility sort of downtown. So I mostly give the cans to the friend who does our yard work, and he sells them. My blue wine bottles go to another friend who is edging her flower beds with them (tops buried in the ground. I now make it a point to buy the Schmittsonne Riesling because it tastes best AND comes in blue glass bottles. There is a service which mostly serves the upscale side of town, and you pay them to come get your recycled goods. It is not a municipal service, like garbage collection and trash collection. But of course, we can put most anything in the trash (9 cubic yards every two weeks) EXCEPT for hazardous waste. Hazardous waste includes things like paint cans with some paint still in them, TV sets, batteries, cell phones. Don't know about florescent light bulbs, but they contain mercury. While they save power for you, they also pollute with mercury. It is not always simple to be a friend of the Earth. With our discussions on this forum, I am becoming more aware of recycling as a need, and sensitized to ways I can do better. Keeping clutter at a minimum means I MUST pay closer attention to what happens to my discards....See MoreCan we get rid of our retaining wall?
Comments (17)People need to get over the mindset of a large tree in close proximity to a house is evil and forebodes all manner of doom! In many area of the country that are rather heavily treed naturally, trees planted or existing close to structures are commonplace. Tree roots are seldom an issue with foundation damage if the foundation is structurally sound - I'd be much more concerned about those of the water lovers and any underground plumbing. And it is almost impossible to replace the stately presence and shade generating capacity of a mature tree in one's lifetime if it is removed. It is very simple to have a tree evaluated by a certified arborist to confirm it is healthy and structurally sound before deciding whether or not to remove. We should be leaving as many mature trees as possible in place rather than cutting them down willy nilly for no valid reason other than we are fearful of its location....See MoreI need help with a family room design in our new house
Comments (5)It is actually not a new house, just new to us. The sun room is one of those porches attached to the house. It is all windows including the 3 doors. I think right now there is those vertical hanging blinds. Yuck! We are hoping to keep the idea of the sun room, but just put on an addition in its place so that we can get rid of the slider off of the kitchen....See MoreEmmi Scott
