outdoor lighting ideas
I need to replace 10 lights around my house. They all match the 4 in the photos. They all don’t have to match, but I need the 4 in this photo to match. I am somewhat restricted because I can’t have lights that hang down, or if they do, it can’t be by much. Do I need to stay with white? Any suggestions? Thank you!

6 months agoI don't understand why you have lights on either side of the windows except to illuminate the driveway/ walkway. I would select a more minimal light like you see below that comes in a variety of finishes that can be adjusted to shine light up/down or both directions.
I do not think 'decorative' light fixtures are appropriate for this location.You could still combine this selection with a squared off decorative light at doorways.

Comments (14)Gas lights were big because they had to be. We have electricity now and don't need those large over sized lights anymore. The front door should be the star of the house, not some huge light fixture that is off most of the time. Sure it should look nice and match the style of the house, but not over power . It is only an accessory. Cabins or log homes originally had no lights. Certainly not gas light. Gas lights were mostly used in the cities. Cabins and log homes were in rural areas. Only when electricity came to the rural areas did cabins and log homes have outdoor lights. More often than not there was only one small light outside the front door. Comments (1)Something that would be really simple but effective would be a push-on battery-operated light. That is, it would be effective only if the kids remembered to turn it off when not in use! Solar lights don't typically provide a lot of light, and you'd need to be in a sunny area for them to work well. You can install motion sensors with almost any system you use. If this is a long-term project, I think solar would be easier on the budget after a few years just due to the ongoing battery expenses running up the bill. Looks cute!...See More

6 months agoOutdoor lighting should follow Dark Sky to illuminate only the areas that need to be lit and only the degree of illumination needed.
Lights that shine upward or outward such as those shown above should never be used; you want to illuminate the path along the house, not the eaves, the wall, or the neighbors' yards.I like this Bradford Outdoor Night Sky Wall Sconce which is available in several sizes, is not so bulbous, and would sit closer to the wall.
