Weird spaces above kitchen cabinets. help!

I have another lovely design dilema today. I have a kitchen that is from the 1990's the cabinets are original and but looks like they were painted and the backsplash and counter tops/knobs were updated. The part that really bothers me is the weird separated empty spaces above the cabinets. I would like to put crown moulding at the top of the cabinets but what do i do with the weird drywall separations between each section? I don't know if those are necessary or not. We don't have much of a budget so I really can't replace cabinets or anything so looking for a diy way of just making it look nicer and less wierd. I like craftsman style moudlings and such if that helps. Anyone have ideas on what to do with that space? Also, I am not a fan of putting decorative items on top of cabinets. I like things to be more architectural in nature. Ideas welcome. Thanks!!
