Newbie here: what do I do with my lilies now?
Comments (2)Stop watering temporarily, then only water about once a week unless it's very hot and dry, or unless it rains, in which case you would NOT water. Your lilies can stay in the ground, provided they are 5-6 inches below the surface. If you want them to come back bigger each year, you have to feed them. I do this by leaving the dried stalks in place, then I dig around them in a circle about 12 inches out from the center. I dig a trench about 3-4 inches deep. I fill the trench with a mixture of blood meal, bone meal and a bit of epsom salts. Then I cover it up and water it. If you leave it dry, animals will smell the blood and bone meal and dig it up. You have to do this for each lily. Lots of gardeners don't use the bone meal, because they believe flowers call mainly for potassium, but bone meal contains a lot of phosphorous which helps build big bulbs and healthy roots. My Orientals and Orientpets are all over 7 feet tall and each one has had over a hundred blossoms this summer. So I say, something must be working right. Every gardener has her own system and there's no single right way. Someone else may have good advice too. Lainey...See MoreWhere do I go from here?
Comments (16)Ongoing saga of this place!!!! I have stood up to DH and have found a custom cabinet maker to finish out these cabinets!! Since they are custom, I can pick any color for the perimeter. The island will be the barnwood that is gray with a whitewash on top. Perimeter cabinets will be shaker with a bead. So, now I am looking for SW, Ben Moore colors? I've heard about Urban Bronze. Any ideas for good taupey gray to go with the fireplace? Counters - I'm leaning towards soapstone perimeter and marble for the island. For some reason, I am liking the juxtaposition of that combination....See MoreFront door landscaping - what do I do here?
Comments (2)The place to start is with a PLAN. Even though you might decide to act as your own landscape designer after getting some advice from people here, you'll still need to convert whatever ideas you come away with into a plan before doing any work. In order to get good advice, you need to convey good information about the existing conditions of your property, mostly through pictures. Here, however, comes the complaint: your pictures are lacking in the information they provide. They're dark, a bit fuzzy, incomplete, and some not from good viewpoints. I see some big trees ... but I don't really see them, or how they affect the picture of your house. One picture should be distant enough to include them so we know how they fit in. Then, from a distance of about 25' from the house, lined up with the front door, there should be a complete, left-to-right span of the property, from lot line to lot line so we can see more detail of what's planted in front of the house. The pictures should slightly overlap so we can follow one picture to the next, and understand what relates to what. Hopefully, you could take such pictures when there are not strong shadows covering the plantings....See MoreHow do I keep my pool sweep from getting stuck on my baja/sun ledge?
Comments (5)We have been using the Polaris 280 for years now. It's based on the original model 180 from the 70's. It's the only cleaner we install on all new builds or reno projects. The 3900 is essentially the same except for a chain drive system. The pool filter must be clean and allowed to deliver the proper flow to the booster pump for proper operation. I would check is the ball float attached at the top-looks like a tiny football. Often the ball cracks and water gets in which affects the cleaner's operation. Disconnect the cleaner and put in on the deck. Try manually turning the left front wheel to see if the opposite wheel is engaged. If not, an adjustment to engage the wheel may be necessary. Make sure the wall fitting screen is clear of any debris. Clogged screens impede water flow and affect operation. Make sure the bottom of the cleaner is not jammed up with kids toys, swim goggles, etc... There's a jet at the back bottom to allow the cleaner to climb the walls or keep it on the pool floor. Generally is set around the 11 o'clock position. Attached is the link to Polaris's site on the 3900. You can view the owner's manual. It's more descriptive and shows illustrations. There's also a troubleshooting section. If you're really in a jam, the support tech hot line is available to homeowners too. https://www.polarispool.com/en/products/pressure/polaris-3900...See MoreCDR Design, LLC
