Need ideas for updating the stone exterior of my home
Comments (5)If your house was built with quality in 1984, I would strongly urge you to wait before "updating" it. I moved into an old stone carriage house that had been converted to a residence by an architect back in 1970. My first thought then - like yours - was to bring it up to date (after realizing that there was nothing left of the original interior to restore.) But time caught up to me, and I came to appreciate the aesthetic and functionality of much of what he did. What I grew tired of was the contribution of the owner who succeeded him, who embellished the bold but simple lines of the 1970s with retro flourishes. Functionally, whenever there is a problem with the way the house works, I go back to the original 1970 concept and plan and usually find the logic. The later improvements, not so much. A recent article in the NY Times about staging houses was instructive. The successful stagers replaced all the period elements (not just furniture but light fixtures, moldings!) and with 1970s style knockoffs! So what I'm saying is, hold on -- the 80s look is not far behind! Don't do something so permanent as destroying a massive stone fireplace or facade without taking a long deep breath. My experience is that keeping the integrity - aesthetic and function - of a house is almost always the best. Unless of course you can afford to completely, totally re-do it. But that is not cosmetic "updating." My two cents....See MoreHelp With Exterior Paint: Any Ideas Welcome
Comments (21)oh ok,,it's not the one I was thinking. The exterior has never been painted, as you can see the primer coat quite clearly. (see the yellowing around the window?) BTW, you could prob have that arched window cut out and replaced w/a more modern looking glass. maybe check w/a door glass business? (Hardware too) you can also look on craigslist for people unloading front doors. sometimes they have some really nice deals on solid wood doors. For instance, if you find a solid wood vintage door, you can easily make them into a Dutch door. are you keeping the storm door? I'd prob paint the edging to match whatever color you do the door here are some Teal shades. I've painted w/Naples Blue. it's rather bold and bright. you know what else might look cool, doing the siding around the door in a cedar slat (or redwood) plank. Of course you're also painting the porch floor and steps too , yes? I'd paint the porch in the peppercorn color, along w/the railing. not so much this door style, but the color is a dark, teal or peacock color. looks great w/the wood siding. and then the surrounding siding in the white, darker porch, (maybe even paint the ceiling w/the peppercorn!!) would look really nice. some darker teal shades like that door. another door style and light here is another dark color. SW Iron Ore. may have a bit more brown to it than Peppercorn. (I also like this door style for your home) And notice the stone accents around the front porch. If the wood idea doesn't suit you, maybe something like this?...See MoreThe exterior of my 1960s side split needs a makeover! Ideas welcome!
Comments (12)-Replace the siding (not sure what colour?) and re-brick over the red brick portion of the house. [why rebrick?] - Replace the pillar with something more craftsman style. [no. This is not a craftsman style house and No room.] - Enlarge the window above the garage (this is the main bedroom) by doing a cut down enlargement. [yes!!] - New shutters (not sure what colours) [no shutters. Shutters are dated except for a couple styles of home.] - Replace the garage door (again, colours are a ??) - Maybe window box planters underneath the other front windows. [no. Too high maintenance. A bed w good for season interest will get you more than boxes. They don’t look good year round]. - New door [color statement] - New garage door and garage light - Change up the landscaping a bit...no idea how though [what is sun for front yard? approximate growing zone?] - Add a lamp post maybe [no!]...See MoreNeed ideas for exterior update
Comments (9)ah, that pink! same style of homes in my neighborhood. A guy I know down the street w/the same roof tile, also did that pig pink! He has a rental home near by and used the same pink! I hate it! everytime I drive by I cringe. (the inside of his house is painted lime green w/mauve/black and white tiles. Yeah, he's a real color nightmare! ) similar tract home style. they went w/Swiss Coffee and Black Tie swiss coffee, dark charcoal trim. wood accents. I recently redid my roof tiles to a charcoal, but I used these colors on my home few years back, and yes the yard needs trimming! this is what I used. And these would work well w/your roof color. Here,,,let me show you a few photoshops done w/swiss coffee on the base, and a dark charcoal on all of your trim, fascia, around the windows, etc. first one is on your garage door, second one is a wood-look color on your door, similar to mine gave you new lights, address numbers and some plants on either side of the garage door. I also covered up all that pink on the front wall. Do you really need the wrought iron? either remove it or have it sprayed the same swiss coffee color (but unless it's powder coated, it won't last.) Paint over all of the pink on the driveway and the wall on the left. you have a spanish/mediterranean style home. Use those colors and those accessories. here's a modern spanish style. you want the best house on the block? copy some of these elements I've posted. dark trim, white stucco, spanish style lights, new numbers, dark garage door, and bring in some xeriscape plants for this type of look some other colors that work w/your clay tile roof Pick the white color or linen color, and two other accent colors. any of these work w/your tile roof Please,, no tan on everything! that's just as bad. Every home on my block is tan and beige! I had numerous people stop me while I was in front of my home and tell me how nice my home looked. I'm the only home on the block who changed their 40 year old tile roof to something diff, and painted the stucco other than beige and brown! do a light body (since all spanish/mediterranean styles had light creamy stucco colors) and a contrasting trim color just to amp it up a bit. wood accents, lights, address numbers and some plants. And paint your driveway and retaining wall!...See MoreB Rose
