1960’s Split Level - exterior update
Comments (4)This suggestion is a little outside the box, but hopefully will sparks some more ideas for you. In my old neighborhood, there were homes called "side splits" where an entry next to the garage lead to a foyer type situation and you walked up a few steps to the side to enter the main living space. I'm thinking this may be a solution for you, especially living in NY you might appreciate a main entrance that doesn't just dump you right into the living room. An awning above the new front door on the driveway level helps define the entrance....See MoreReno ideas needed for boxy "beige folder" 60s side split!
Comments (9)Is that snow blowing off the roof or do you have an overhang beyond the upstairs roof? Sometimes you can "rebalance" a split level or side split by creating a horizontal line level with the single story roof across the front of the two story part of the house ... even if it is only an overhang attached to the house and supported by triangle braces rather than an actual porch. (second pic) https://www.thisoldhouse.com/curb-appeal/21019103/photoshop-redo-rebalancing-a-boxy-split-level Adding a 6' deep front porch (budget and building codes permitting) can work even better , especially if you can add that porch across much of the front of the house and continue the horizontal line with a portico or shorter overhang over the garage at the same level -- a shed roof but adding a forward facing gable over the front entry ... over the entry door and side lights and their frames.....See MoreBye Tired Bow, We need to update the window in this 1960s split level
Comments (7)I agree to both the flat window and making sure the replacement is like the other windows and also working on the front yard starting removing or at least moving the evergreen that is blocking the view of the front door and I always like a walkway from the street to the front door . I think aporch across the whole right side of the house would be a much nicer idea than sprucing up the ground level area , use the plants you have there for the new walkway. A new front door and all the siding and trim in this color with the brick and maybe remove the shutters the whole change will be like having a new house....See MoreDesigners! need help coming up with ideas to update Split level exter
Comments (13)Thank you to everyone's suggestions thus far! I really appreciate it. I agree with everyone that a good deal of landscaping in front is a must and would go a long way towards adding curb appeal to the front of the home. Beverly- what if I have the budget to change the entire level of the roof over the single story part of the home? I was thinking I could do a dramatic higher A-pitch style roof to add visual interest and also enable the addition of a long front porch? We just keep envisioning a french country exterior and we will do what we can (within reason- not going the entire value of the house) to get that look. Changing the roof line (to either an A pitch or a multiple "peak" look) would also give the appearance of a larger home and also allow us to raise the ceiling heights in the main living area of the home - i.e., opening up the entire kitchen and living room to each other as well). I did get an estimate to move the AC unit and it was around $1500 so not cost prohibitive for what we want to do....See MoreRelated Professionals
