Ok....these are soil mites, like it or not. :-) All of the appendages ARE legs, but aren't used exactly like you seem to think all legs on all creatures work. The longest pair are used sort of like antennae in that they check out the pathway in front of the mite. There are many species of soil mites, each behave in different ways. This one resembles the images of the predatory mites I've seen images of....feeding on springtails, fungus gnat larvae, etc. They don't feed on plants. Other soil mites are decomposers, feeding on the smaller bits of organic matter in our potting soils. They don't feed on plants. There are others, but those two groups are the most likely to be found in a houseplant container. There is no need to use a systemic pesticide on these critters. Imidicloprid pesticides can actually cause an increase of the pest (phytophagous) mites. The DE that I mentioned earlier would be a good product to use. Controlling arthropods is what horticultural grade DE is used for and has been for many years. Don't use the type of DE used for filtering. The next time you repot, you might (pun!) treat the mix in advance by pouring several pots of boiling water through the pot, or placing a pile of the moistened mix in a clear garbage bag, close it tightly and let the hot summer sun pasturize it for a few days. I don't like to recommend oven or microwave baking. You are just one of lots of people in these forums who have fretted over what had turned out to be harmless (beneficial) soil mites. No need to worry.

Since it is the only stem and it looks like there are new, healthy leaves, this is how I would handle it... First, I would go get the components for a fast draining mix - you could start with some all-purpose mix, add in some perlite and a little orchid bark. I'd probably use a ratio of 2 parts each of the potting mix and perlite, and one part orchid bark. I would whack it back to above that first set of ugly leaves, pull what's left of it from the pot, shake off all the old dirt (no need to wash it, just get off what's clingy...) Then put the rootball in the new pot along with the stem with the good leaves. It should root fairly quickly in a warm bright spot (no direct sun) and your old stem should send out some new growth within a few weeks. You'll be rid of the old ugly leaves and you'll end up with two plants in the pot, making it fuller. Denise in Omaha

Thank you...from looking at the description, I think lacunosa is accurate, though it's hard to tell on other websites. And my other one is definitely carnosa variegata...which is very happily neglected on the front porch and blooming right now.

Oh sorry.... He said it looks like i have root damage from wither a period of to much water,or a period of it being to dry. But it more than likely wont die, especially since it is blooming all the time, and is not dropping leaves. This is very possible, considering he way I water my hoyas, I basically water them when I pass by them ....so I could over water, then they are to dry for a few weeks, But they all nd bloom even more! This si the only big problem,and of course it is THE plant I want to keep alive the most! He didnt mention any nutrition problem, but warned me to not use Epson salts, that it killed many hoyas of a friend of his, so I am staying away from them. I think it is an iron problem to, so i am going to try and find an iron supplement to add to the fert. program. Maybe get it to green up. Something that can be absorbed by the roots. The hunt begins.
