Comments (25)That is great you put a hold on the island cabinets until you get it all worked out. I looked at your drawing more closely. I do think it could work as it looks like you are planning a 15" overhang so final dimensions will be very close to mine. See mine is 57"x58". You do not need the angle cabinet I have to the lower left. I just chopped off that corner (sometimes I wished I didn't so keep what you have). For that back corner, you can either fill it in with a panel or have your cabinet maker make a little 12x12 triangular cabinet with a single door. If you take that option, have the door open to the right--otherwise you'd might need a bit of filler like I did on my left door. This is where my island got complex (see the note about the 1-1/2" extended style), but with a single door I think you can avoid it. You can show your cabinet maker my drawing and see what he suggests. If you go that route, let me know as I can give you more precise details. It may be easiest (and cheapest) to just fill in that corner. Putting something there allows for better suppoprt of the counters--what are you putting in? Keep in mind with an overhang over 12" you need to have couter supports and need to plan out where you are going to put them. Do you want corbels or will your rod your countertop? When you have cabinets opening off both sides of your island you then leave no place for corbels. That was OK with me as I did not want them so have 3 steel rods put on top of the plywood to support the granite....See MoreHow best to make an island work in my kitchen?
Comments (19)We'd like to help, but we need more information so we can help you design a Kitchen that will work for you and your family. Please see the Layout Help and Kitchen Design FAQs for more information on what we need. E.g., we need a measured layout with the lengths of all walls/windows/doors and the distances b/w each wall/window/door (there's an example in the Layout Help FAQ.) . One thing you want to be sure to avoid (if you stick with an island) is a "barrier island" narrow aisles will create a barrier island, wider ones will help prevent a barrier island. In addition, since your refrigerator is on the opposite side of the Kitchen from your Prep & Cooking Zones -- with the Cleanup Zone and DW b/w them -- narrow aisles will be even more of an issue - you have to dodge a potentially open DW door to get to/from the refrigerator and Prep & Cooking Zones. To expect someone to go around that island while prepping or cooking is not very cooking-friendly! If you keep this layout, I recommend the aisle b/w the perimeter and island be at least 48" - and that's measured counter edge-to-counter edge, not cabinet-to-cabinet. . Kitchen Design FAQs: . Comments (41)I know this isn't very sophisticated, but turn your desk so that the cords are facing the wall. You can move the side of the desk against the corner wall to get the most space in front of it. Even if then you have to face the wall, you will at least have the side area open, an "escape route" if you will, and folks coming in can use it to access you. Then, because facing the wall is going to be annoying, put something both behind you and to the right of your desk, on the wall to the right of the monitor, that is fun to look at. Then, put the two chairs in the corner or against the wall opposite the door, with a little table between them. Put something interesting on the table that has some life to it. If folks are in your office and you all need to work around the monitors, then you can move the chairs around to your desk easily. Also, then you can slide your desk chair back away from your monitors to other parts of the room to give yourself a break from the hum and radiation, if even just for a minute. You can even get out easily to do a little stretching. If you close the door, no one will know. And get florescent light alternatives ASAP! Facing a wall is not ideal but I have found if your job is to face a monitor most of the time, it doesn't matter if there is a wall behind it. It's a wall anyway. So by putting other things on the walls around your monitors or behind them, it gives your eyes something else pleasant to look at around you. A fake window or great scenery poster could go on the door wall then, and when you looked up from your monitor, it would be to the right of you. You could put another poster on the filing cabinet wall, which would be to your left....See Moresmall kitchen islands--has anyone seen any nice ones?
