Gas fireplace insert: electrical/gas line related work

Hi,
We are in the process of converting our traditional wood burning fireplace into a gas insert. We had one company over for estimate for electrical/gas line work related to the project, and it came out to be just under $1,500. Im surprised that it costs that much for gas/electrical work and this would push our total cost over budget. This person even mentioned that our job is fairly simple cost shouldnt be too bad!
On top of this 1,500, there is also the actualy cost of installation, cost of the gas insert unit, and not to mention other extras such as permit, etc. This is turning out to be much more expensive than we had originally thought.
