Do you want the door to have a grain finish or do you want it smooth? Are you planning to stain or paint? Plastpro makes doors in a wide variety of textures. We have 3 of their 3' wide 6'8" tall smooth doors--2 are full lite & one is 1/2 lite with raised panels on the bottom. We are very pleased with them. The thing with the glass in the doors is that alot of times the manufacturers use the cheap frame around the glass that screws in place & the screw hole fillers are never put in properly. Plastpro is one of the very few that offer a flush glazed glass for their doors which is far superior aesthetically, IMO. Click the link below for closeup photos of the flush glaze frame. We moved in not long ago and updating many things ie: took popcorn off ceilings, replacing doors/trim ec, We took out wall that divided kitchen, LR and DR for open concept. I wonder if I should paint windows all white and add white trim? Maybe paint one of the walls a different color? I wanted to make the room warm and cozy due to all the dark colors. The lamp is not staying it is just for lighting as I will put recessed lights in. TV wall I am deciding on shiplap wrapped around to front door on wall or brick and hang tv. I am thinking I would like 94-96" curtains to make room look taller rather than 8 foot ceilings. Main window is 85"x76.5" Side window is 76.5"x 43.5" I did find Damask curtains I loved and I know they were dark but, cannot find and or fabric Thank you for all help and suggestions, January

Some history: The oldest building code I own is the 1970 Uniform Building Code that says "In private stairways serving an occupant load less than 10, the rise may be 8" and the run may be 9". Before Massachusettes wrote its own code it used the BOCA Code. The 1970 BOCA Code required riser and tread dimensions of 8.25" and 9". The next oldest code I own is the 1974 Massachusetts Building Code where the riser and tread of a residential stair was 8" and 9". The next oldest code I own is the 1985 CABO 1 & 2 Family Dwelling Code (Council of American Building Officials). The stair riser and tread requirements were 8.25" and 9". Sometime between 1990 and 1995, the CABO riser and tread dimensions were revised to 7.75" and 10". In that period BOCA did the same for residential uses. When CABO changed its name to the ICC and published the 2000 IRC, the 7.75" and 10" riser and tread dimensions were retained. The ICC publishes a new IRC every 3 years. Massachusetts adopts the IRC 2 years after it is released and amends the riser and tread dimensions to be 8.25" and 9". The current MA residential code is the 6th edition, 2015 IRC.

Not sure the reasoning even behind niches in the main living areas if that is where you are speaking of. But if these are fro the main living area I will say the answer is it depends, on you home layout, you furniture choices, your wall widths (think artwork, tables, etc), future room layout, resale.. There is no simple answer and it is close to impossible to know why your builder would say buy prefab over framing them himself.
