78” is the standard and if you are adding all that trim that is what you need.I would be careful about crown molding with 8’ ceilings it can make the ceiling feel even lower and in a lot of homes with 8’ ceilings they do not suit crown .

78" would work better especially with the trims you mention. You want at least some wall showing between the crown and door trim.

Standard is 6'-8".

A standard door is 6'8" or 80", not 78".

A 6-6 door is what you use when a 6-8 door won't fit. Its the minimum allowed by building codes.

There was some discussion recently to amend the Residential Building Code so that the clear open height of a door need only to be 78" measured from the threshold to the stop, but the typical door stop is 1/2" to 3/4" thick, meaning that you would still need to select 80" standard doors to comply unless you are doing custom sizes. This also didn't pass committee vote. Therefore an 80" tall door is still the code minimum.

Code requirements aside, I think you would limit your future marketability with 78" doors. People are trending taller, and even someone who is 6' to 6'-2" may find a 78" door uncomfortably short.

80" doors still leave 16" to fit door casing a crown, and assuming each are no more than 5" there would be 6" or more between the elements.

The 2015 IRC requirement for the height of an "egress door" (the exterior door in the required egress path from the house to the outside) is 78" from the top of the threshold to the bottom of the stop and other doors are not required to comply with this minimum dimension.

My state amends the iRC to require 2 exterior egress doors and interior doors providing access to habitable rooms must have a nominal height of 78", therefore, a 78" door is allowed everywhere except at a required exterior "egress door" and doors at bathrooms, closets, corridors. storage rooms and utility rooms have no minimum height. Strange, I know.

It's wise to check the amendments to the residential building code in your state. I write them into the margin of the IRC book when they are issued; no one can remember this stuff.

A. Fox, typical interior door stop thickness is 3/8". Also standard doors that are availabel everyday off the shelf are 6'-8" (80") in height. Why would anyone pay for a custom 78" door and or pay someone to cut 2" off of a standard height door for absolutely no reason?

Ah, I wasn't looking far enough ahead. Indiana Residential Code is still working off of the 2003 IRC and Chicago doesn't use the IRC. In both cases a 78" door would not be allowed in new construction. In either case I still don't see a logical case for a shorter than standard door.

Millworkman, then 3/8" - 3/4". In my house they are 1/2" and in standard commercial construction they are often 5/8".

On the note of that amendment, what is up with the recent trend in loosening some codes? Indiana for instance recently changed the minimum riser height from 7.75" to 8.25" and the minimum tread depth from 10" to 9" in residential construction.

Some history:

The oldest building code I own is the 1970 Uniform Building Code that says "In private stairways serving an occupant load less than 10, the rise may be 8" and the run may be 9".

Before Massachusettes wrote its own code it used the BOCA Code. The 1970 BOCA Code required riser and tread dimensions of 8.25" and 9".

The next oldest code I own is the 1974 Massachusetts Building Code where the riser and tread of a residential stair was 8" and 9".

The next oldest code I own is the 1985 CABO 1 & 2 Family Dwelling Code (Council of American Building Officials). The stair riser and tread requirements were 8.25" and 9". Sometime between 1990 and 1995, the CABO riser and tread dimensions were revised to 7.75" and 10". In that period BOCA did the same for residential uses.

When CABO changed its name to the ICC and published the 2000 IRC, the 7.75" and 10" riser and tread dimensions were retained.

The ICC publishes a new IRC every 3 years. Massachusetts adopts the IRC 2 years after it is released and amends the riser and tread dimensions to be 8.25" and 9". The current MA residential code is the 6th edition, 2015 IRC.

Will leave door height to the pros. Just wanted to say we have 8' ceilings with crown molding. When we bought our house only one of three bedrooms had crown molding. It had been installed throughout the rest of the house. We had it installed in those bedrooms immediately, and it was pretty amazing how it lifted the eye UP making the ceilings appear higher.

Being 6'-4" tall . . . go for the taller one.
