how to clean steel moka???

Hello - what is the most effective way to clean this moka bottom chamber? I am not sure if it’s normal or if it was left without proper drying but it’s dark inside… it’s not dirty but it looks not too appealing… any way to leave it in the inside the original color again?

1 part white vinegar and 2 parts water in the moka. Let it sit for 40 minutes. Heat it for a cycle. Heat and steam will clean it. Some believe a layer of coffee oil enhances flavor.

I tried this and still black… vinagre and water… also w sodium bicarbonate. No coffee oil though….

JuneGardner - That happened to us quite a number of times: waking up to coffee overflowing the counter is NOT fun! When you shake the top, you can hear a ball-like piece jiggling around. You can imagine that as coffee flows over it, the oils and residue will start to accumulate in that space, too...and sometimes the ball just gets stuck in place, which plugs the hole where the coffee normally drips in. I soak the top in a bowl of warm, soapy water for about an hour, every few days....really jiggle it around to loosen the old coffee. During my daily wash/rinse, you have to keep the ball jiggling as you're washing. Haven't had a leak in a while. Good luck.

That's it doing its job. Its zinc oxide & zinc hydroxide.. or something like that. Helps or increases the protection for it not rusting. Clean it with a brush and hot water & amonia or mineral spirits. To get it all is probably impossible as it starts developing oxide right away when exposed to air.

I've been using Bar Keeper's Friend powder and one of those non-scratching scrub pads with luck. I have a Thermador top too, but what I find really hard to clean are the corners around the burners. They're star shaped, and those little tight corners are hard to get in. I haven't pulled out the toothbrush yet, but rather just hope no one looks at it too closely! I love a gas cooktop, but had a smooth-top electric range several years ago, and with exception of having something boil over, I'd much prefer to clean that than a gas top!

Bar Keeper's Friend, the powdered kind. Sprinkle and clean with damp paper towel, then wash with regular dish soap.

This is stainless. You can sand and polish it. Wet/dry 2000 grit sandpaper used with water can sand it. Bonami or Comet or toothpaste are mild abrasives.

The issue is that it’s inside the chamber so it’s not easy to maneuver in there

Boiling hot water and a dishwasher tablet. Sit for 2-3 hours or overnight. We use this method for coffee stained thermoses.

Any stainless steel or aluminum has to be cleaned. You should have no problem getting your hand inside with the BarKeeper and a wet paper towel. I clean mine almost every time I use them.

ETA: Yours looks inside, like my egg poacher. The water turns the pan. It will not affect the taste, just the look. The bottom is a reaction to grease.
