Suggestions on how to clean up a very dusty garage!

Hi!

I am looking for suggestions on how to clean up my very dusty garage! We just moved in to a new house and garage is very dusty. We even found 2 disposed pipes that seem to have asbestos-containing wrapping around it (it has been taken care of, but we don't know how long the pipes have been sitting there). So I want to have a very thorough cleaning! We'd like to turn that into an entertainment place eventually. I am open to hiring a company to do that but not sure such crew exists? As for doing it myself, I am thinking of renting an hepa air scrubber and a shop vacuum, and wear n95 mask while doing it? Any other suggestion? I am just an amateur so any suggestions are appreciated. Thanks in advance!

What kind of garage is it? Stand alone old thing, newer with drywall attached to the house, something else? Sometimes garages get dustier because of that big door on it can let in more outdoors. Sometimes there is damage, or age going on.

What kind of dusty are you talking about? Too much housedust for the average person? Years worth of sitting? Dust from a workshop or something like that? How much cleanup you need might depend on the garage and dust. If it's an older unfinished garage, running an air filter in it won't help much. A shop vac is super handy. Not sure if you need a N95 mask, that could depend on your level of dust sensitivity and the kind of dust it is.

How old is the garage? I ask because of the asbestos comment. If the house was built in the last 40 years or so, there shoudn't be any asbestos. If it's older than that, you can call in a company that deals in asbestos abatement- they can see if the dust in your garage is asbestos or not.

I think best would be to grab a stepladder, get up there and take them down for a rinsing. At least you're already in the bathroom, so don't have to go far to give them a rinse in the shower. Alternately, you could grab that same stepladder, and go up there with a spray bottle. Spray them down really well and then wipe the leaves with a cloth or paper towel.

I just bought an antique / vintage quilt rack. I doubt it is actually valuable, but the size and color are just right for what I could use. Winter is coming! I have quilts! It is stained a light walnut color with a reddish tint, but seems to be just pine. Seeing it in daylight (the store was dimly lit), it needs a good cleaning before I get to touching up the stain where it has been scuffed off. It seems like embedded dust rather than oily grunge. Areas of end grain are the worst. The finish looks thin. I was going to just wash it down with soap and water, but that end grain is going to soak up a lot. Would mineral spirits be better? I may want to add a coat of some finish to seal it better and spiff it up. If I donÃ¯Â¿Â½t know what it is, how do I test? Thanks!

I know I'm a little late to this party, but I can't help myself: When my brother and I were 2 and 3, we tipped over the gallon can of olive oil in the pantry and amused ourselves until half the can had poured out through the tiny holes our dad had poked in the corners with an icepick...(remember those days?) Olive oil everywhere, slippery as could be. What fun! The oil seeped through the wooden floor boards through to the ceiling of the apartment below. As long as we lived there (another ten years or so) every time the floor got wet it smelled of old olive oil. The oiled parts of the wood got darker and darker, and no matter how much paint the landlord applied to the ceiling below, the stain remained. We are 60 and 61 now, Mom is 85. She reminds us of that day every time she thinks of olive oil, and how she didn't know what to do first - laugh, cry, curse herself for her momentary lapse, or clean up the floor or the kids. I bet the place still stinks.

I'm not a pro, but I did buy a dirty house that needed deep cleaning before we could start renovating. I started at the top and worked my way down. First use a cloth dustmop and vacuum to clean the ceiling, tops of moldings, and walls. Continue to the bookcases and other horizontal surfaces, insides of cabinets, etc. Dust the floors last. After the dust is removed, you can start cleaning with wetmops, damp cloths and your favorite cleaning products. Lastly clean all glass and mirrors. I wouldn't use water or any liquid until as much of the dust as possible has been removed. Good idea to wear a mask and a head scarf, too. Sorry about the mess! My place was really bad too but we got it done after a lot of hard work.

The garage (standalone) was most likely built in the 60s. We just moved in a few months ago. The asbestos-looking pipe isn't part of the garage. It looks like it was left on the bench, not connecting to anything. It's a mystery. There is no air duct inside the garage. Since we have no knowledge of how the garage was used, we have no idea what kind of dust they are. For sure it has been accumulated there for a long time.
