Schreiners Iris - disappointed

Just wanted to vent. After being a loyal customer of Schreiner's for a number of years, I am pretty disappointed with my last order. I ordered only three varieties this year - Dracula's Kiss, High Desert and Snow Melt. All rhizomes I received were pretty small, and Snow Melt was substituted with Clarence, which has a washed-out look (Snow Melt is a high-contrast amoena). Quality is just not there anymore and prices are way too high - $50 for three small plants, with one of them being a poor sub. This was last time I ordered from Schreiner's...

Marian, I can understand your disappointment, but I think you are quite lucky to actually have a local AIS affiliate. Because I live in Indiana I was automatically placed in Region 6 which is IN, OH and MI. I live in the far southwestern corner of IN and not close to any AIS affiliate clubs. Region 6 seems to be pretty active judging from the nice newsletters I receive, but it's too great a distance for me to get to any of the meetings or shows, particularly those in northern Ohio or Michigan. Still, I don't regret joining AIS. I find that the AIS Bulletins have been getting more and more informative regarding hybridizing and iris care in general. I love sharing the beauty of my irises, so I usually invite groups of friends and neighbors for iris tours, but it would be even nicer to share them with other dedicated iris growers. This is more of a purple dark lavender blend than red. Wild Thing had notoriously open standards everywhere I saw it so I don't think that could be it. Mill Valley was a Gaulter iris and probably would have been handled by Cooley. It was more of a dark lavender with a white beard, I think. Sorry, I cannot identify what is pictured. Walter Moores

Oh, wow! What a wonderful trip - it is on my bucket list - thank you for all the beautiful pictures - very enjoyable. I have ordered from them few times in a past - and they send healthy huge plants. However, actually being there in person and absorbing all the beauty of display gardens - that would be a dream come true. Go ahead Universe, make it happen - I am ready! :)

Hi Kimthenewgardener: Welcome to the Iris Forum. Bulbs (really rhizomes) coming out of the ground are perfectly OK. That is what the iris like to do. If you don't see this, means they were probably planted too deep. For the winter where you live (and I think NJ is quite similar) I don't do anything. I do my cleanup in the Spring. I leave the dead leaves and green leaves as natural mulch. The trick is to get the cleanup done before the borers come out; means they need to be all cleaned by early April. Some people do the cleanup in the Fall, and yes, you would then remove the dead leaves and trim green leaves, but try to let the leaves stay on as long as possible so they can maximize their growth and food storage potential. Yep, sent an email to their CS, and was basically told "tough luck, specify no subs next time" (first time I did it, stupid me). I just wish they contacted customers when they run out of a particular variety and ask for their sub preferences/priorities, instead of sending whatever they feel would work. Anyway, I am not going to think too much about it, there are plenty of other sources. It's just that I spent $hundreds with them over the last 4-5 years, and I placed my order in May this year, way before they started shipping - so I didn't expect them to run out. As for the quality of rhizomes - they say it's been a dry season, that's why they are all "on the small size". Which is fine, but why not disclose it on the website. I'd rather spend my money on something else, or buy three irises elsewhere for the price of their single one. Presumably, plant quality is the main reason why Schreiner's charges more per rhizome than most other sellers.
