First time house planter - needs soil advice!
Comments (3)Hi Katy, welcome to GardenWeb and house plants! I see that you're in Canada from your profile so think I should ask first about terminology. Our friends in England use the word compost interchangeably with potting mix, so I wonder if that is what you meant also? Or did you intend the American meaning of the word compost (the finished product of decomposition?) Alison, I agree with the reasons you've offered why one wouldn't want to put "American compost" in a pot for propagation. Also agree with finding a use for this bag of stuff, once we're sure what it is. But I would encourage you and Katy to explore this issue a bit more if interested. Store-bought bags of potting mix (at least without some type of alteration/improvement) are not usually preferred by those who have been growing potted plants for a long time for various and numerous reasons. In a nutshell, these soils hold onto moisture too long, and fill all of the spaces in the pot, so there are no tiny air pockets. This can cause roots to rot, especially if it's packed tightly around the roots, although it will settle itself into that condition without packing. Container soils and water retention/movement. I don't like what peat (the primary and most abundant ingredient in bagged potting mixes) does/how it acts in a container, and since I've stopped bringing this stuff to my house, my plants have stopped dying from "overwatering." That's all I need to know. But there are other reasons one might want to move away from peat. Peat moss ecological issues....See Morevanity advice needed--x-post from home decorating
Comments (12)I like option 2 because it makes sense to fill the whole wall because of mirror issues, as you said, and I think a 56" vanity provides a nice amount of counter space. The shallow cabinet in front of the door will help the room feel less cramped, and I agree the wall mount vanity will help too. If she can live without solid surface, there's lots of formica out there that could look really good and modern without breaking the budget. I am in the process of a bathroom remodel, and also have the marble-look floors. I ended up finding a quartz remnant that is almost white, with just slight veining. It looks great with the floors. I had to look pretty hard to find a remnant, but it can be done. I'd say I probably saw an equal number of 2 and 3 cm remnants. But definitely finding granite remnants is easier, and black might be a good option....See MoreNew to plant care. Need advice for first house plant. Pachira Aquatica
Comments (2)This link will be helpful: http://forums2.gardenweb.com/discussions/2842847/container-soils-water-movement-and-retention-xxii?n=419 give it as much light as you can. If you're in the Southern Hemisphere, a south facing window would be best. Place it right up in front, not a few feet away. Water from the top only. Water until it runs out the drain hole, but discard the collected water and never let it sit in that. Water as the plant needs it. Stick your finger a couple inches into the soil, or feel the soil at the drain hole. Water when it feels dry....See MoreFirst House - Need Help with Design/Decor!
Comments (8)Bahaha, I didn't even notice they looked like "boob lights" until you pointed it out. What has been seen cannot be unseen! Structurally, we're in great shape. No major fixes are needed for at least another 5-10 years, at which point the windows will have to be done. Otherwise, everything else is already new (or relatively new). These are all great ideas and I'm so grateful to everyone that chimed in. I think I've just been feeling so overwhelmed and like I need to tackle everything at once... but as so many of you pointed out, it's OK to sit on it for a while (even years, if I want to)! One of my biggest issues is that I just don't know what I like. I know that sounds crazy, but since I was never really able to make changes to my space before now (we even lived in an apartment when I was a kid), I never had the opportunity to develop what my "taste" is. I will definitely spend some time on my idea books and start narrowing down what it is I like. I have found between Pinterest and now this site (which I just found today) that I seem to be leaning toward a more rustic-type look. PS. I don't actually love all that tan. It's a bit darker than the color in the living room and although the lighter color looks decent in the living room, it's "meh" for me in the dining/kitchen area. Any thoughts on what might look OK with the current kitchen schema, or should I just go for white and revisit later? Thanks again, everyone! I so appreciate the help....See MoreJAN MOYER
