First flowering of Hoya stoneana

After several years of not paying this much attention, this finally opened a few flowers. It has a nice fragrance that isn’t too strong.

You can see the spurs are long as if it has bloomed many times, but they never made buds, just got longer. Once I read all the buzz about flat mites I became more regular with spraying, and lo and behold…

Are you giving it sulfur spray?

Tracy, I don't know if this will help or not, but go to www.gardenwatchdog.com Scroll down a it, look on the left side of the screen, click on plants & supplies sold in Canada..They have numerous listings. I don't know how many sell tropicals, but it's worth a look..one day when u have time give it a try. I worked in 2 gh's selling plants..it was fun and getting paid for it, too..the only problem I had was lifting 30+lb plants, especially those sold in self-watering ceramic pots..it killed my back..but that's part of the job..to sit and talk plants to customers all day would be great, but it's the other stuff that's a pain, literally..lol..Most customers were great, but every now and then you get a jerk..asking really stupid questions. and when you answer, and they don't like your reply, you can tell they want to debate..lol..but for the most part, it's fun working w/plants..Toni

Let me introduce you to Pepeuve. He grows Hoyas in Malaga, Spain and posts occasionally here. I bring him up every time someone asks the question you just asked: How do I make my carnosa bloom faster? Pepeuve's carnosa cuttings (with no prior peduncle) commonly produce blooms between 6 months to 1 year after they are rooted (also those he trades away). Here is a very nice blog post that he did, linking all his prior posts on this topic. Please note the auto-translate options for his page, accessed via the flags. This should tell us all we need to know about how long it takes a carnosa to bloom. If the conditions are right... not long at all. :) So, my advice is to give your Hoya very strong light, like it was grown outdoors in Malaga, Spain or native Southeast Asia, and you will be pleased. I myself had an old plant that did not bloom for nearly 10 years. One year after I moved it right up against a good east window, it started blooming generously. Beautiful! Congrats..I'd watch out for those mealy bugs though, it seems you have a few on those buds..Spray quickly before the buds fall apart! You see the white specs on the first pic? Can you tale a closer pic of those just to make sure?

Hoya cv Mathilde first bloom

So lovely! I have a small Hoya cv Mathilde. It’s my first and only hoya, but now I have hoya fever and have a long wish list. First I’m trying to research as much as I can, because so far I’ve had one leaf fall off of mine and the end of the vine turned yellow a few days ago & it’s all dried up now. Any care tips you wouldn’t mind sharing? Only if you have the time of course. I can’t seem to find a lot of info on the Mathilde.

It is one of many species that are from higher elevations in the mountains of India, Burma, Thailand, Viet Nam, China, etc.

I seem to do well with the cooler growers here in foggy San Francisco. I don’t heat so the real hot-house ones do nothing in my conditions. Oh well, go with what goes well.

I am using a couple of commercial miticides, but no sulphur. I may add it to the rotation; what brand do you like?

If you have good conditions for stoneana I can share a cutting if you’d like.

iochroma, you are so generous to even offer! Thank you. It sounds like it might do well here in Colorado. But I really don't know.

Commercial miticides are fine I'm sure. The one benefit of sulfur is that it seems to be something hoyas appreciate as a nutrient in addition to be effective against the flat mites. I'm using the Bonide sulfur powder and i just mix some (about 2-3 tbsp per gallon) with water and then spray that. In fact, I'm plotting another treatment as soon as it cools down a bit here before it's too cold to be taking hoyas out.
