They produce two flushes of blooms. The spring flush requires that the old wood survive your winters and frosts. To get spring blooms, the last 2022 fertilizer application should be done 3 months before your average date of first frost; to protect the stems and buds during winter, consider winter protection; to minimize late frost damage, remove winter protection and fertilize after your average date of last frost. The second flush is produced by the new stem growth in spring 2023 once these stems get tall and old enough to bud and bloom, which is usually late summer or fall as its stems can get almost 5‘ tall. Promptly fertilize with a slow release fert with a Npk of 10-10-10 after your average date of last frost at full strength. Fertilize at full strength in July. Provide plenty of direct sun exposure, about 6 hours of sun. May need to switch to a variety whose height tops out at a max of 3’ if your variety grows taller and is unable to get tall enough to bloom: Summer Crush, Pop Star or some of the ones in the Let’s Dance collection at provenwinners.com Do not use high nitrogen fertilizer formulations of Miracle-Gro. Note: the December 22nd arctic blast killed/reduced blooming this year in spring. Ensure you are not cutting off leafless stems too early; consider waiting as late as the end of June.

Did you prune them at all last season? pruning too late can cause this to happen.

@Jordan (z7) I did not prune last year but all the stems above the ground died from the freeze.

Same here in Texas. They died in December after temps crashed to the low teens from 70s.
