Growing Dill
Comments (12)Thanks everyone for the input. I am trying to establish a self-seeding colony like I had at the other house. I have covered the seed shallowly, and just left it on the surface of the soil, nothing either way. In the old garden it self sowed, I covered with several inches of chopped leaves in Fall and it came up on it's own in the spring. We have been having an unusually hot and dry year so far here in SC WI, so I'm thinking it may be a commbination of factors, not the least of which is uneven moisture. I have been watering dillegently for the past few days and just last night noticed a few green shoots coming up. I am going to take the last of my seed and plant in cell packs and germinate in the cool basement under lights, see what happens and then transplant. Thanks again everyone for your great advice. Comments (17)Mommyandme, I understand that one well. Last year we had flooding rains and I lost 55 zinnia seedlings and 35 dahlia seedlings all to slugs. Nothing I could do about it either cause they where either in a yard turned swimming pool or a mud pit that looked and felt more like quick sand. Our weather has been really bizzare all spring and summer. Either really cold in June, the heat went on a couple of times until mid June with the thermostat set at 62 or it was drop dead heat and humidity. For the last month it's been a couple of days of horrible heat and humidity or it gets really cool again. Rain fall has been at a premium until today. Not even a thunderstorm all summer. So I need to go out and cut what I do have and maybe that will make them fill out and look better. Will do that one tomorrow. Not sure what kinds they are as the seeds where from trades and they aren't blooming what they where labeled. I did have one zinnia pinwheel that bloomed a very small flower and was only about 2 inches tall. then it got a trip across the lawn in the mouth of a chipmunk. The rest look like these plants or they haven't bloomed yet. some where supposed to be 3 feet tall, others short. Fran...See MoreWhat Are the Secrets .. growing Great Peppers ?
Comments (18)Seysonn is correct. Use plenty of lime. All the vinegar will react. You need to keep stirring until no more bubbles of gas are given off. At that point all the acid in the vinegar has been used up. Let the stuff settle and you can pour off the liquid leaving the excess lime in the jar. You can pour more vinegar over it and repeat the process. If you want, you can buy Foli-Cal: http://www.montereylawngarden.com/product_information.aspx?242000p=f57d7b74-c030-4e60-b13d-2763bed4b322&240000p=7dd648e8-a73c-4a82-8d60-3bcdc816a4f9 The Dolomitic Lime in the witches brew also provides Magnesium, which isn't in the Foli-Cal. Smoke thinks the stuff gets peppers to set buds faster....See MoreAnyone growing Atlantic Dill?
Comments (19)It took awhile for female flowers to present. I'd go out and hand pollinate each morning and look for squash borers. The pumpkins are a bit more resilient to squash borers as they'll send out roots wherever the touch earth. Still a nuisance though. Occasionally I'd abort a fruit as I didn't want *too* many giant pumpkins. I was still hand pollinating in July. The thing with these giants is that when they are ripe, even at moderate sizes like mine were, they are a pain to move and store. Having them ripen as close to Halloween as possible was ideal for me. So having them set fruit later in the season worked perfectly. We also did some smaller varieties that set fruit sooner, but were much easier to store....See Morerosaprimula
