Im surprised i havent read no where on this site or rthe other of anyone growing florida pink. These huge, 2 to 3 lb fruits are a gorgeous light pink. Extremely juicy, sweet and crack free, Florida Pink out-produces most plants in our garden. With very few seeds, huge production and great flavor, it is a favorite for cooking and fresh eating. Setting fruit well in hot areas, this beautiful tomato will be a fine addition to your garden. thats what laurel says about it. rowdy red is another i think will do well im growing. Named by Gary Ibsen, the seeds of this variety came to Gary from tomato breeder, Archie Millett, who crossed his favorite tomato varieties over many years to finally produce a disease resistant tomato with intense flavor. 'Clint Eastwood's Rowdy Red,' is an open-pollinated tomato (78 days to maturity). The tall, indeterminate, plant produces lots of 2-inch (6-10 oz.), deep-red, round fruits with a subtle point on it's end. Fruit has robust, 'not for sissies,' bold, tomatoey flavors, with a firm, juicy flesh, that invites snacking in the garden, cooking, canning and seed-saving. If you read the blurbs, it is only intermediate resistance, not immunity. You MUST protect the plants to some degree or they will always go down with TYLC. There are some varieties available now that have more stacked resistance genes. Four genes are in current literature ty-1, ty-2, ty-3, and ty-4. Check the Florida breeding program for some details. One of the new resistance mechanisms is plants that repel whiteflies. Combine this with some of the virus tolerance genes and we should have tomatoes that grow and produce regardless of whitefly presence. The Florida breeding program is working on this but may be a few years away from highly resistant plants.

Betsy, I haven't grown Tomande but it's my impression that it's a modern hybrid tomato bred to resemble an old fashioned, European, red, heavily ribbed, mid-season, full flavored tomato with a full range of disease tolerance. I can remember just one sterile, aka mule, variety and that was what we now know as Limmony, seeds for which were sent to me by SSE for trial after they got them from their contact Marie Danilenko in the former USSR. Two plants and one had no blossoms, nothing, but very healthy. The other plant clossomed and set fruit normally. But I have seen lots of sterile mules in the planting fields of my commercial friends who grow hybrids. They are much larger plants and stick out in the fields b'c they're also taller, but no blossoms, nothing. Actually there was another variety that was sent to me years ago as Botanique Originale and it had the most beautiful shooting star type blossoms but not one set fruit. That's when I found out that several of the tomato species are self incompatible. LOL Carolyn
