OK Let's try something different: Switching out
Comments (7)Hey there, Massachusetts hosta lover! Desperation falls is a great screen name! I switch things out all the time....when they are growing, that is. I think "dappled shade" is a good thing, and of course that is what I give them here in zone 9a. Even direct sunlight of three hours morning light would be adequate, but after reading in the brand new Zilis Field Guide To Hostas that up north 3 hours sunlight is enough, I'm impressed how hardy/sturdy these hosta really are. I'm a real newcomer to hosta growing, fell for them when I was up in MA and brought them south with me. With your long years of experience growing hosta, you should have no problem balancing their needs to your conditions. I love those gold hosta myself. One question though: WHICH golds are you considering for this swap? Maybe try a Dick Ward in one of the pots. It has a green margin, really rugose midleaf of gold, and it is a super strong hosta. It comes from Zounds, a great rugose gold itself. Do you have either one of those already? Then you know how they are strong hosta. Also if you have King Tut, that is one worth trying too. You do not want a gold that burns in the sun, and King Tut is recommended by Zilis in his new book, Field Guide To Hosta. A fragrant gold that I got last year is Tortilla Chip. It looks really nice. Guess which one in this picture is Tortilla Chip? Have fun. I'm primarily a container gardener of hosta, but my zone is way different than yours....See MoreUpstairs too warm, trying to sort out causes and find solution
Comments (29)Follow-up: I got a full audit with blower door test, which was awesome. Found a number of prominent leaks, some of which I'm plugging myself (supply registers, outlets, windowframes), some of which are for future consideration (basement), and some were plugged when I got my attic sealed and insulated yesterday. It turned out that after my recent roofwork, there were some areas of the attic that really needed to be sealed and insulated, so I am I happy I got that done in any case. Now we will see how the house performs on a hot day, assuming we ever get another one around here. Next on my todo list is probably my horrible supply ducts in the basement for the upstairs supplies (undersized, uninsulated and leaky). But we'll see how things go in the meantime....See MoreAnyone out there try painting your appliances?
Comments (14)I painted my old dishwasher to match my lower cabinets. The new cabinets are gray but the dishwasher was white and I thought it would stick out like a sore thumb. I took a cabinet door in to the paint store to get the paint matched and the paint guy also tinted the primer. I told the paint store what I wanted to do and took their advice as to what paint and primer to use. I can't remember the paint, but I'm pretty sure the primer was XIM. I washed off the front of the DW with TSP, lightly sanded, wiped it off with a damp rag, let dry and used a mini roller to apply the primer. Repeated the sanding step and rolled on a coat of paint. I thought the finish could be better so stopped in at a different location of the same store and they gave me a little paint extender and I bought a different type of mini roller. Then, a second coat of paint. It hasn't been that long, but so far--so good. I still want to do something to the control area so it won't be so white, but haven't figured it out yet....See MoreTrying to find out about this soft gray green (link)
Comments (5)When we moved into the house I live in now, the living room diningroom, den, solarium and hallways was painted a similar color....but the previous owners had tossed the paint cans and didnt' remember. After many false starts, including mixing blues and greens and greys, I finally took a door off of a cupboard and found a knowledgeable paint dealer and matched the paint! It was a certain tint base, but the color added to make the "light grey green" was black..... Who knew!...See MoreIda Claire
