Anyone know anything about Dahliettas?
Comments (1)This is just a variety of Dahlia not a different plant. It is bread to be small with a specific flower, just like the dinnerplate dahlias are bred to be tall and have large flowers. Treat it like any dahlia and don't forget to save the tubers for next year...See MorePodocarpus macrophyllus maki /will these be massive?
Comments (15)Unlike bboy I don't think the zone is the issue, per se. At least w/regard to slow growth. I think anywhere in the western US, the issue is: are they getting enough water? Most of the common ones in the US (like Maki) come from parts of China that get 6-12 inches of rain PER MONTH in the summer. Thus by California standards, they are water hogs; although they can probably survive on less, they may not grow as fast. Looks like at least one progressive California wholesaler now eschews the Chinese ones, either because they are too common or too thirsty, or both. http://www.smgrowers.com/search/basesearch.asp?strSearchText=podocarpus&x=0amp;y=0 OTOH almost no conifer is going to behave like say, Oleander, and go zooming into growth the year it is planted. They like to get themselves settled. So maybe you are being a bit impatient. I have a Larix from China that only grew 4-6" a year for 3 years until least summer - conincidentally one with twice our normal summer rainfall - when it threw out a shoot that was about 28" long....See Moreanyone know anything about Ledebouria cooperi?
Comments (7)Have many(and I do mean many!) in my sunny afternoon rock garden. It is hardy(not evergreen) in Zone 7(positive reports from zone 6) and has spread so rapidly that all of the other plants in the RG are in danger of being overrun. I haven't tried them in a wet location, but their native habitat is damp grasslands from southeastern Africa, north to the Indian sub-continent. The blooms arise on seperate stems after the foliage and are attractive, small pinkish globose clusters, made up of many tiny flowers. They usually persist for a long time. Not all of the bulbs will bloom each year in our locale and the foliage may be rather late emerging from some bulbs. Family: Liliaceae(Hyacinthaceae) Species: Ledebouria cooperi Synonyms: Ledebouria violacea, Scilla cooperi, Scilla violacea Common Names: Striped Squill, Pinstripe Squill This plant is a conversation focus in my RG because of the tiny flowers and striped foliage, so have fun with it and you will soon be able to share some with EVERY garden friend! Comments (5)After reading reviews and checking out what appears to be the actual online nursery website, I might be interested in visiting the greenhouse if I was in the area but would forego ordering online. It sounds from the reviews like you might get really nice plants, but also might get bad stock with no recourse. From the website FAQ: "Can I return an item that is damaged, defective?Sorry, no returns are accepted, all sales are final, all merchandise including all plant material is inspected for damage before packing, if you would like your package insured, please notify us by email and we will insure at your cost, when the package leaves our facility our responsibility ends. We will exercise care to have all plants true to size and name. We give no warranty expressed or implied as to the fitness for any particular use of the stock we sell. It is agreed that the original price shall be the maximum damages the purchaser is entitled to." http://www.accentsforhomeandgarden.com/faq.html It didn't sound from the reviews I read that they were eager to give out refunds....See Moredavidrt28 (zone 7)
