You're not overthinking. I wouldn't do mirrors.

Also, a lot of people are uncomfortable sitting under a mirror that is merely hung on a wall (rather than being part of the wall).

I personally do not like the idea of a large mirror in a living or dining room. I think it’s a major distraction/annoying to watch ourselves. However, the right mirror(s) in the right spot can be integral to a beautiful and functional space. In dressing areas, bathrooms, entry to check yourself before leaving the house, above a mantel, or in place of a much-needed but non-existent window. If you want to add a mirror to a living area such as a dining or living room, a grouping of small mirrors may be a better option.

Or, include a small mirror in a gallery arrangement of other works of art on the wall opposite the large piece. More for the style of its frame than for its ability to reflect.

We have no picture to see. Post a few in a comment box below, from different angles. I generally think there are better options over a sofa. Despite you have two and we can't SEE what you have?

I rarely like mirrors in LRs or DRs and yes people are not usually happy about constantly seeing themselves get anotehr piece of art it is okay to hang more than one in a space .

@Jilly…. i agree, who in the heck stares at themselves whenever there’s a mrror in the room ?? Narcissists perhaps, there are a few of those who enjoy having a mirror around. All of the walls at the gym I work out in has mirrors, floor to ceiling. As you stated, somehow I’m able to tear my gaze away from my image & concentrate on what I’m doing there.

If you're beautiful, it is a distraction. Hard to put into words for others who are not, I guess, but I like to think of the comfort of my many different guests. One thing to look at yourself in a mirror when it's there, another to think only of yourself all the time.

It is funny how polarizing mirrors are. I'm going to come down on the side of no mirror - art is just more attractive. I actually love mirrors and have to hold myself back sometimes. I have one in my foyer and one in every bedroom. But I also love art. There is nothing better to add color and character to your home. You'll get more specific advice if you post some pictures of your room.

OP here. Thank you so much to all who have commented. I'm adding photos as requested. I'll add each photo in a separate comment so it is clear which wall I am talking about. This room is very much a work in progress and I realize the mirror is not the only issue. (Fake flowers are the wrong color, wreath does not belong in the room, etc.)

South wall - this is the wall I want to put the mirror on, centered over the sofa. Sofa measured at the back pillows is 78 inches wide. The mirror width is 67 inches and height is 44 inches. The mirror has a 4 inch wide gold frame which is included in the measurements.

North wall. This wall would face the mirror. The art on the floor would be mounted on the wall over the love seat and would be reflected in the mirror. (The mess behind the loveseat is the box currently holding the gold mirror. The mirror can't be removed from the box right now,)

West wall (just for context.)

Looks like you already have a big mirror, but if I wanted to have mirror on one wall as you're proposing, it would be more interesting to have an arrangement of mirrors. They will reflect some of the art, but not a static image of either art or people on the couch.

I might think of doing an L shape with your sofas. They are too far apart for both to use the coffee table.

Please draw and measure the room? I don't think you have the best arrangement. Nobody wants to yell across the space.

I think back up a bit, get the core pieces and seating looking friendlier before you drive nail holes for any mirrors.

I found this pic of a large mirror over a sofa, which I thought was quite nice. If you move your sofas into an L shape, then no one will be looking at themselves in the mirror.

The second pic is a small mirror gallery, for an alternate idea. If you can find a pic online of the mirror you purchased, it would help people advise you.

I have a mirror addiction. Placement is key. There are no steadfast rules. I think it is more about how you are reflecting the light or architectural interest of the room. Can the mirror hang on the west wall to the right of the door? If so, it will reflect the light coming in the window and the view out of the window. It will almost serve as a second window. Hanging it above the sofa just reflects the flat wall across from it, which doesn't really add much to the space.

I think it is fine to start with a piece of artwork or a mirror as the first item in a room around which to anchor your other furnishings. The layout of the space does look like an uncomfortable waiting room. Who is going to be using this room and when? Is it an additional sitting room or your main living room? Are you wed to this furniture or would you consider swapping the love seat for an arm chair or two?

I think you need to get your floor plan straightened out before hanging art, etc. I agree with Jan that the sofas are too far apart. Maybe sofas against the walls are not the best idea in that room.

That sofa is a basic 3/ seat roll/sock arm CUSTOMIZED. You can't buy it online, but you can customize @ any high /moderate source like Hickory chair, or Taylor King through a brick and mortar furniture store or an interior designer.

Measurements, I hope this will work, I don't know the correct way to do this.

The small brown pieces of furniture can go :) Though I don't have a large budget to replace them.

The loveseat and sofa are only a year old so I can't afford to change them. I would like to buy an arm chair though.

This is our "occasional use" living room; we have a family room that is attached to the kitchen and gets the heavy use.

Agree sofas against the walls are not the best but if I pull them out from the walls, there is not enough room to walk behind them.

I have not been able to find a photo of the mirror. It's proportions are a bit unusual as it is a short and wide rectangle. Very attractive 4 inch gold frame. Classic look. I have been told it was purchased at Costco years ago. I have it on approval, I have not yet bought it and can return it to the friend I am buying it from if I change my mind.

Fake flowers also need to go , you need lighting and some window coverings maybe drapes to add some softeness to the sapc e.Anoter piece of art for sure and the two do not have to have anything in common other than you love both of them.
