I'm a bit late to this thread. We lived for years in the TX hill country and had large numbers of whitetail and axis deer roaming our patios nightly. I kept a pot of Kalanchoe luciae outdoors all summer, and occasionally I'd find a nice round deer bite in one of the paddles, but it never was a big favorite with them. The occasional deer bites sure do show up on the big round leaves, however, so you have to have a sense of humor about the resulting look. That was nothing compared to the complete destruction of many other plants, though, so I didn't mind the occasional chomp mark. My hat is off to anyone who gardens in areas with large deer populations (or equally challenging rabbits!) It's not easy! Best of luck to you.

I use it for 2 years and it works! "I have used a similar solution for years. (We have 30-40 deer every night feeding on the field next to us and some adventuresome deer always manage to sneak in under the dog's nose.) Fill a 4 litre milk jug almost to the top with water. Take one egg. Whisk or beat the egg really well, DO NOT STRAIN. Pour into milk jug and close lid. Shake back and forth to mix. Now, pour some into a small squirt bottle and as you are walking around your acreage or yard mist the plants you do not want the deer to eat. You do not have to POUR the solution on your plants, a little mist goes a long way. Rain will wash it off. I reapply after EVERY rain or dew and otherwise about once a week, if no rain. I have NEVER noticed a smell of rotten eggs on my plants in hot weather. The mixture will smell if left unused for a few days and you will smell the solution as you are misting with old solution, but it goes away as it dries..... my garden does not smell in hot weather. The protein smell deters the deer. You can spray your plants with fresh or days-old mixture, both work. My spray bottle has been used for about 4 years and has NEVER "gummed up". Better solution... permanent solution...an eight foot fence or deer hunting season."

The deer seem to like some of the plants from the Lily family. I'm growing several different Lily varieties, including the 8 foot bushy Breck's LilyTrees and found out that the Dial soap in the colorful socks seem to keep them away from my flower and veggies. The deer seem to pass up my area when passing through the evergreens and other trees behind my house. But, they visit my neighbors yards and wander through them and cross the streets via same, but, not mine... When I lived on a couple acres in a heavly treed area area beforehand and had a veggie garden 120 feet long by about 30 feet wide and had a 4 foot fence around same, they would jump the fence and visit my 20 foot long raised beds that were full of veggie crops. There, had raccons that gave me some competition and would even beat me to my corn when it was ready for picking and the like along with some other crops too... Now, in a senior citizens development and container gardening. This year, have 10 containers alongside the house/building that contain Lily flowers and a few veggies in the 30 to 50 gallon Rubber Maid type containers, both circular and oblong. Drilled holes in the bottom of the containers for drainage, and bars of Dial soap in the socks near all of them, and hanging off of the tomato cages etc. I like to use the Square Foot Garden method in the containers. THE PHOTO: Had just planted veggies last month in these 4 containers and have netting across same to keep the birds away from the newly planted herbs and veggie plants. Note the bar of soap hanging off of the waggon wheel. Added more of same to this area to keep the deer away... Have the Pink Flamingos "on Duty" in NJ... Slugs aren't an issue in our garden ... we don't treat for them nor see significant damage from them. We do containerize all our tomatoes and peppers, though that's a different matter unrelated to deer. The space in the L of the house is generally less bothered by deer, but it is small and filled (large hosta, faucet, and space for tomatoes and peppers). The yew next to the door gets munched, though primarily in the winter, so still not entirely safe but less appealing when there are options. We have plenty of coyotes/coywolves, and they're not new. They can be heard nightly and seen periodically running through the yard. (There's a pack to the north that probably lives on the aqueduct about a quarter mile away; they're the noisiest. There's another pack to the east that is likely a bit further away but not far; that may or may not be the same pack that can be heard to the south, which would be in the preservation land a quarter to half mile away. I haven't seen the pair of coywolves recently, but they're probably still around ... they come up from the back (south).) There's a fox that lives by the wetlands behind our property; it generally doesn't come up past the pines in the back of our yard. We know the canines are around ... we don't want to entice them to come closer or more than they do ... hence the question in regards to attraction. They're already around; we don't want to give them a reason to come here beyond their normal pass through, etc. Fencing the property isn't an option ... we're not taking out the stone wall, and we'd like to have an open view. We cage some plants, and it offers them some protection, but who wants a garden where all the plants are in prison? We have a small garden with a mid-height fence and raised beds that is generally safe other than some minor reaching (the blackberries are probably an additional protection), but it's only 5 4x4 beds, three of which have established blueberry bushes in them. The remaining sun bed is full (well, it has one hole that already has its transfer plant assigned). The shade bed is a challenge (it's pretty much under the enormous Juniperus virginiana) but could probably accept a couple hosta divisions. I can't fit an entire garden (or three) of plants into a couple raised beds.
