A new appreciation for my yellow daylilies

My yellow daylilies are showing off a bit while most of my others are suffering to some degree. Too many splotchy and miss shaped blooms.

Dances with Giraffes with a perfect first bloom and close to registered height.

First bloom on Buttered Popcorn blooming in 90% shade.

Solar Blast, perfect bloom for this double. Its a few inches shorter this season.

Another perfect one for Simplicity in Motion.

A clump shot of Coyote Moon, always perfect blooms.

An almost perfect bloom for Heavenly Hidden Treasure.

A good bloom on Getting Airborne…..it is not air born this season. Scapes are just above the foliage…..at least a foot shorter than past seasons.

I love the way Dances With Giraffes cascades so gracefully! The Coyote Moon clump looks great, and I like the color combo on Heavenly Hidden Treasures.

Maryl and I keep trying to tell you guys to Go Yellow!!! LOL

Dances with Giraffes does have lovely cascades. I think you will teally like Simplicity in Motion. Heavenly Hidden Treasure is bright.

Thanks Bambi, I wasn't sure if I should worry as ALL my autumn planted ones have stayed green from the day they were planted all through the winter regardless of whether they are evergreen, semi-evergreen or dormant. Which makes it very confusing for a newbie!! Nikki

Everyone, GOLD KISSED should not be doing that poorly here. Gosh, it grows all over the country although I don't know what the budcounts actually are. But if people normally had budcounts of three on it, I am sure they would notice. It had a budcount of three last year but I chalked it up to being new. No such excuse this year. This happens to me sometimes. I get a daylily thats just a dog here in my garden, very poor performance. Yet others on Long Island would grow the same daylily just fine. But that didn't help me as I have to garden here. And you have all seen pictures of my garden. I have enough sun and decent soil. So when something just turns into a dog while others thrive, I really have no explination. CHEDDAR CHEESE always looks perfect and its the older one. As my personal preference, I do absolutele love, love, love that rich glowing golden yelly color that they both are. I zero in on it right away as I walk the garden.

I think it is more than the areas, It seems to me like soil affects shades too. Lambertson (Art Gallery Gardens) has some beautiful ones that are really purple for me. I went on a purple hunt when I first developed the daylily addiction.) I used to just sit and almost drool looking at the gorgeous purple pictures...then I would grow it and get red!!! Indian giver is purple for me, and so is Mean as a Snake. So are some of Karol Emmerich's intros. Ask and let people like Ellie and Debra and heck, some of your Florida neighbors tell what should be purple for you. (Rita has already given you her thoughts on it). I just plant. If something clashed too bad, I might move one of them, but maybe not too. I love color. I would tell you to appreciate the fabulous array of things you can grow there, but I try to push my zone too. My Getting Airborne is still tall, but many others have short scapes. Glad that you posted Dances with Giraffes. Heavenly Hidden Treasures is about normal height, isn't it?

Did someone say YELLOW! Kate and I agree. Put a little sunshine in the mix and your daylily world will be much brighter. Love the picture of Dances with Giraffes. Amazing that that is the ffo. Usually you have to forgive the first bloom of the season. I like Coyote Moon and Heavenly Hidden Treasure is a pretty one too.........Maryl

Lovely yellows! I love Dances with Giraffes--such a wonderful shape. Ours is looking pretty good this year too.Simplicity in Motions is another with a cool shape.

Mantis, Yes, Heavenly Hidden Treasures is close to stats this season. Very few daylilies reach the registered height here.

Maryl, Little Castaway is a small in my garden, a bit bigger than Stella D’Oro. It is supposed to have 26” scapes and 4” blooms blooms…….scapes have never been close to that tall.

I am adding several yellows this fall. they do set off the other colors nicely and I, like you Maryl, have enjoyed the good blooming on the ones I have. I join the crowd in liking Dancing With Giraffes. Simplicity in Motion is very pretty and I especially like Heavenly Hidden Treasure.

I agree Kay, the yellow is good contrast to the other colors. I love my yellows!
