Whenever someone says "Everything happens for a reason," I tell them that that does not mean it is for a good reason.

Jasdip's reminds me of that old joke about the student in Cambridge Mass, standing at the express lane with a cart load of items and the cashier says, "Is it that you go to MIT and can't read or do you go to Harvard and can't count?"

My cousin met her husband when he was in front of her on the express line in a supermarket in Boston. If she had had eleven items, she wouldn't have become Mrs. Fred!

A painter by the name of Paddy Murphy, while not a brilliant scholar, was a gifted portrait artist.

Over a short number of years, his fame grew and soon people from all over Ireland were coming to him in the town of Doolin, County Clare, to get him to paint their likenesses.

One day, a beautiful young English woman arrived at his house in a stretched limo and asked Paddy if he would paint her in the nude.

This being the first time anyone had made such a request, Paddy was a bit perturbed, particularly when the woman told him that money was no object; in fact, she was willing to pay up to $10,000.

Not wanting to get into any marital strife, Paddy asked her to wait while he went into the house to confer with Mary, his wife.

In a few minutes he returned. "T'would be me pleasure to paint yer portrait, missus," he said. "The wife says it's okay."

"I'll paint ya in da nude alright, but I has to at least leave me socks on so I has a place to wipe me brushes.".................

Tangental to the coffee shop cartoon: I heard on the radio that while a 'regular' coffee in the Midwest is plain black, in NYC is is (or was) coffee with cream and sugar. True?

Limits while shopping: This was new to me. The other day waiting in line for my turn to ring out at the grocery store a woman said "You will have to ring the hamburger up in two transactions, there's a limit".

Always used to be true about NYC coffee. I learned that the hard way. Nowadays, some chains give you the cup and you fill it yourself from a dispenser and add your own condiments . I think that Starbucks must have its own jargon. I drink mine black, no sugar, (like a marine, as my dad used to say), and I specify that so that they fill it to the top.

Chisue, that's true. Although you usually don't order "regular coffee," you order "coffee, regular." Also, while waiting to order, you don't stand "in line," you stand "on line."
