BEFORE: Martha and Greg Lohman had enjoyed a “fun and colorful” home when their sons were at home, Martha says, “but when they left the nest, we did feel it was time for the flamingos to fly the coop too!” The couple opted to go in a totally different direction and to create a relaxed, spa-like enclave for their updated master bathroom.
AFTER: After removing the flamingo wallpaper, pink marble tub and pink counters, the couple created a muted and calm space in neutral tones. For the floors, they chose beige porcelain tile that sets off the brown and beige accents lining the exterior of the tub.
To save money, the Lohmans used the original vanity, painting it for a fresh look, plus adding new hardware and a new countertop. The couple found a remnant piece of Juparana Delicatus granite for $1,318 at a granite store. Double square sinks, bronze faucets, pendant lights and a framed mirror provide the finishing touches. As a practical step, Martha also requested that the contractor put an electrical outlet inside the medicine cabinet so that Greg could “keep his electric shaver plugged in but off the countertop,” she says.
Another big change was enlarging the shower. This required structural work including taking out the soffits above the shower space and the vanity. To keep an open feel, the Lohmans chose a frameless glass shower.
Vanity paint: Turkish Coffee 6076; Sherwin-Williams; floor tile: Florence Beige, Original Style; border tile on tub: Carthage, Original Style; tumbled mosaic tile on shower floor: Emperador Dark, 2 by 2 inches, Stone Tile Liquidators; sink and tub faucets: Vilamonte collection, Mirabelle; undermount bathroom sinks: Ferguson

A built-in bench gives the shower a more spa-like atmosphere, Martha says.

The Lohmans’ contractor installed a prefabricated niche for holding bath supplies, and Martha says she prefers the prefab niche to the customized version done for her guest bath remodel.
