Salvador Dali had a painting and it had melting clocks in it. The melting clocks symbolize time being different and more fluid in when you are dreaming. I think this is what a joke is alluding to., Perhaps the woman is saying that there is not a lot of reality going on and opening the curtains and seeing a Salvador dali like picture is tantamount to saying that things are very unreal right now.

I am guessing and could be completely wrong. :-).

I was wondering if it was referring to the extreme heat happening in some places right now? Hot enough to melt clocks?

To me, it always symbolized time slipping away.
