Ledges, niches and shelves
Comments (32)I like both niches and having a ledge for shaving. But the niches do need to be up far enough and out of the way of shower spray to keep them from getting gunky. I've found that behind the shower spray doesn't cut it and I hate the corner things that aren't really 'niches'. Had one in a former shower. Also they need to be big enough to put most things actually in them, including tall bottles, with shorter things and razors on an upper shelf within the niche. The lower ledge for shaving should also be out of the way and not so big as to obstruct a person standing under the shower. Good examples, Eureka....See MorePicture ledge dilemma
Comments (17)Kathy - photos? After some thought I decided on a gap - so then what size gap? I have a bunch of little pieces of wall - 61", 33, 19", 20" etc.... I wanted some continuity but if I subtracted too much on little spaces it would look silly. I decided on a 1/10 ratio i.e. 3" on the 33" wall. I got about half of them done and will poly them tonight. I ended cutting up the boards that I intended for the longest wall - they were very warped. I will have to see if I can find another butternut board. One board we had inventoried as butternut was some kind of cedar. It smells just like cigar boxes when I cut it. I will make something out of it... Maybe to go in my closet.......See MoreWould Picture Ledges Work Here?
Comments (13)I would mount just one ledge, which leaves room for items on the credenza as well as larger peices of art on the ledge. I'd use a white one so it matches your trim color and doesn't stand out as much so the focus can remain on the art you use. I'd figure out exactly what console you're going to use under the TV first before I added anything though. I know you're planning to get a longer console to use under the TV, but your credenza seems like it would be a perfect size. Have you considered using it under the TV and then gettting a taller shelving unit or armoire type peice for that back wall?...See MoreNew tiled shower - ledge or corner shelves?
Comments (24)@tartanmeup - checking in to see what you decided re: corner shelves or one longer shelf. I want to add a shelf like you posted in my guest bathroom - on the wall across from the showerhead - out of the spray line (this is a tub/shower combo). If I was doing this in a larger walk-in shower, I would just have a false wall built on the lower part so it would be a ledge. However, it’s a tub/shower combo so that’s not happening. I decided against a niche (for a few different reasons) - decided to just add a few corner shelves since it’s a guest bathroom. HOWEVER, after I saw this, I’ve wanted a shelf: I was told to use Mapei Flexcolor CQ grout in order to avoid any inconsistent color issues. @palimpsest - is your shelf just held by the tiles above/below? Was it custom made for you? Last Q - how thick is it? @laurenn07 - your shower looks nice!...See MoreJAN MOYER
