Name That Plant!

Please not poison hemlock

plant was more than 4’ tall and pics were taken May 30, z5, NY — very windy day. It’s not what I call Queen Anne’s Lace, and doesn’t seem to match Cow Parsnip pics, so the closest I find is poison hemlock but I couldn’t find any purple coloring on the stems. Can anyone tell me what it is?

did it smell like carrot... or were you afraid to touch it???

sure looks like QAL to me.. but i dont know what your idea of such is ... but im no ID expert...

it often helps to tell us where the plant is.. big city name...

I'd guess Wild Chervil (aka Cow Parsley), Anthriscus sylvestris, but I'll wait for one of the Apiaceae experts to chime in.

I've had burns from parsnip sap + sun. It was very painful and the burns were purplish but it cleared up without a trip to the doctor. Everyone is different so caution is best. If it is hemlock, take the opportunity to tell and show the young people at your place exactly where it is, what it looks like, and what it does. A healthy respect and caution for such powerful and poisonous plants is good for everyone to learn. Even if you pull it out, it is possible for them to encounter it or other toxic plants. maybe in pastures everywhere with no dead horses, but as a horse owner, i go by the rule if it can cause problems, it will someday cause problems. my horse unfortunately is a browser and samples things that are bad for him like bracken fern and maple leaves. don't like to indiscriminately cull natives, and i'll leave any in the "wild" parts of the property alone, may even try elderberry syrup someday. thanks to everyone for the quick response.

Diane, the toxins are to ward off herbivores, not other plants and therefore are not released into the soil as allelopathic chemicals are. The toxins degrade readily and are unlikely to be taken up by other plants in any case. Most human poisoning occurs when people mistake the roots for parsnips or the tops for anise (the latter error is unfathomable to me as the foliage has a fairly strong odor - I have never grown parsnips or troubled myself to dig up any poison hemlock around here so I can't evaluate the odds on the former error). Depending on how small or large the area is, if you can you might want to buy some sort of landscape fabric or something that would smother them/burn them up. I used black fabric to control the weeds in my garden, you just have to make sure to keep it there for the season.

Thank you, thank you, thank you, arbordave and tsugajunkie!!!!! I've been searching on-line and never found a photo of a plant that looked like mine, but that king county photo matches exactly! phew! I did NOT need Poison Hemlock.... I'm already struggling with the poison ivy I discovered last year... all these unknown and noxious plants are coming in from the neighbor's wild field and woods! :p

lol! Ken, thanks, you crack me up. I doubt if listing the nearest large city would help most people... I'd name Syracuse as the closest anyone might recognize, but it plays like a zone warmer than here. :) And, no, the plant didn't smell like carrot, but it was a VERY windy day. Besides, I know QAL and I was certain that this plant was not QAL.
