How do i polish my polyurethane floors

How do i polish my polyurethane floors after ive popped a final coat of poly on? I really want them to shine and they look dull. Help what am i doing wrong? Should i wet sand over the last coat and then polish?

What was your final sanding grit prior to applying the first coat? Have you tried applying a high gloss finish?

If you can feel bumps or humps, then those will likely show through the paint until you sand them off. There is really no need to use a poly for profects like this anyway. Just use high quality 100 percent acrylic paint in a washable finish (satin, semi-gloss, etc) and you should be done. The only time you may want to use a poly is when the paint is flat, but the better option is always going to be using a washable paint if you are looking for durability. Putting a poly on top of a paint does not make it more durable unless you are using really crappy paint.

If you don't want yellow or orange, you will need to stay away from oil based finishes. The oil based finishes turn ORANGE all by themselves. We call it "ambering". The "honey oak" everyone is talking about = oil based finishes. If you like the look wood RIGHT NOW then you have to stay away from the oil based. And just for fun, the oil based finishes USED to be called "solvent based" but the average homeowner got scared of the word "solvent". The manufactures change the LABEL on the bucket to say "oil based" and that's it. Some of the same formulas that were there in the 60's (ahem "solvent based") are still in existence simply under a new name that doesn't scare anyone = oil based. The high-end, expensive, two part polyurethanes have been out performing the solvent/oil based finishes for the past 5-10 years. They are impressive but most homeowners don't like the price tag...they are often $100 more per gallon then the regular 'oil' based stuff. One of the main reasons you need to be out of the house = the floors need to CURE. They are soft and vulnerable to DAMAGE in the first few weeks. Staying off of them gives them the best possible chance to harden up and become the hard finish we know and love.

I think most of the "warmer" tone you get with oil-based poly comes from the absorption of the poly directly into the wood on the first coat; i.e., it has a slight "staining" effect (this is based on my own observations when we do site-finished floors on our projects). Since your wood has already been sealed with water-base poly, putting oil-based poly on top of it (even assuming it would adhere properly) probably wouldn't have much of a "warming" effect. My recommendation would be to add some water-based stain to the water-based poly you're already using and try applying a coat or two of that to get the "warmer" tone you're looking for.

The same way you polish paint on a door or wall, by applying a shinier coat over the top. I suppose you could use techniques employed on polishing paint on a vehicle, but it likely wouldn't be uniform and it would be a lot more work than applying a shinier coat.

If, you really want to use the method Timothy mentioned. You need a machine that will rotate up to 3000 rpm. You will need to buff your finish from 600, 1500, 2000, 3000 grit and then use polishing compound for a glass finish. It wil be time consuming and very costly. Most homeowners will settle for a high gloss finish since, it's more economically affordable. Not as pretty but affordable.

A glossy surface starts in the sanding phase. If it is not nice and smooth then, forget it. A gloss finish will only magnify the issues.

But the only real way to do this is to use a floor finish with the gloss level that you want. Which, obviously wasn't satin or matte. You don't take a finish with flattening agents included in it and ever polish it to as high of a gloss level as a finish without flattening agents. It will always look cloudy, and translucent, rather than a clear transparent finish.
