What kind of internet connection do you have? It could be a slowdown in your service or a problem with your modem or router. Do you clear your cookies periodically? That can also cause slowdowns.

I am more worried about not able to open pages. Same internet for years.

Do you clear cookies?

Do you turn it off on a regular basis? If you leave it on all the time, it may need a reboot.

Clearing browser history sometimes helps with sluggishness. I clear history every month or two, leaving no more than three or four months (current month + two or three). I clear all download history more often. I never clear cookies except in a few instances that seemed related to them, such as sudden inability to log-in to a particular site which worked with a different browser or on a different computer.

You didn't say which browser you're using. I use Firefox. I've noticed that it thrashes the hard drive and won't open pages for up to a few minutes which presumably is due to internal "housekeeping" processes 1) after it installs updates, 2) after I've had a session of several tabs open of queued-up YouTube videos, and 3) after opening batches of 14 and 21 tabs to check daily stock quotes.

You didn't say if your Internet service is cable, fiber optic, wireless, etc. I've had trouble in the past with my cable service getting sluggish daily from late morning or early afternoon until after 10 PM. Called for service, they replaced the coax cable drop from the pole to my house, problem solved.

I use edge, I shut down every day, clear items often. Internet service, its cable I think. I just want to know why I can't open pages. This has been going on for some time now.

Have you tried using another browser? Same problem? When your internet speed is affected you sometimes don’t have the bandwidth to open pages, especially graphics heavy sites. So if your provider varies speed or your equipment is not working properly it can strangle your bandwidthand cause slowdowns. If it works properly with other browsers, then there might be a setting in edge that’s the problem. If it does it in all browsers then I’d call the cable company.

Is the computer connected via ethernet or WiFi? Have you done any Internet speed tests to check what you're getting on it? Speed Test . net is a good one. Is your hard drive thrashing when the browser non-response occurs? Maybe it's getting bad, having trouble reading/writing.

How old is your computer? What version of Windows?

What does this mean? You've used them and the internet still slows down periodically? You can't open pages? Or??

How old is your modem and router? Do you own them or get them from your provider? I would call the cable company and see if they suggest replacing one or the other to improve your experience.

Is the computer itself running slow (local programs and files without internet) or is it just the internet operations that are slow?

You need to find out what speed your service provider is supposed to be providing you, and then see if you're getting that. Here is the site I use to test my speed when things are running slowly:

If you are having problems opening pages and you have decent speed, then the issue is with your computer or browser. If you are getting slow speeds, it's time to gripe to your service provider.

Extremely slow = speed! If your internet speed is slow it won't open pages, or at least not quickly. That's why we are trying to get you to use a different browser to see if it is the browser slowing things down or maybe your internet speed. OR it could be a failure of your equipment; i.e. your router or modem.

Did you run a speed test as Kudzu suggested? Do you have a hotspot on your phone? You can connect to the internet that way and see if you still have a problem opening pages. I had very slow internet until recently (when I finally got Starlink) and sometimes I couldn't open any webpages unless I switched my wifi to my phone hotspot. Your cable shouldn't be that slow but if there is something wrong, your cable company might help figure it out.

If windows is updating, that can slow your connection down considerably.

An automatic/scheduled antivirus scan can slow down a computer until it completes. A computer that has a slow processor or minimal RAM will exhibit slowness, more at some times than others depending on what functions and programs are running at any given moment. Hard drives on the verge of running out of free space or failing.

Clearing the browser cache and history after every session (or too often) can have an adverse effect of requiring the page(s) to be fully reloaded via the Internet connection on every visit which makes the response slower, especially on a slow connection/service.
