Galley kitchen with counter top convection oven

Hello all! I am in the process of planning a renovation in an apartment with galley style kitchen. I will have a gas stove, plus a microwave and a convection oven. Can you good people please share some photos and resources as to where I can put the convection oven and microwave? It is not a in-wall unit. I do not have a budget to replace either of these appliances, so trying to figure out if I just leave the convection oven on the counter top, right next to the fridge, will it look very ugly? Will it be dangerous? Thank you all!

You didn't provide any information on the size or layout of the kitchen, or the size of the gas stove you're planning to buy.

Instead of buying a gas range, how about buying a dual-fuel range. You'd then have one appliance with a gas cooktop and the convection oven that you want. If you have room for a standard 30" range, the LG LSDL6336F is available at both Home Depot and Best Buy for $1900. If you're really strapped for space (and money), the 24" Haier* HCR2250ADS is only $1344.

You said you didn't want to discard the microwave oven you own, but a 30" over-the-range microwave can cost as little as $200 (example: Amana AMV2307PFS) and the 24" Forte F2413MV5SS is only $300.

All the cooking appliances would take only 30" or even 24" of horizontal space and leave the countertop free of appliances.

Both of those ovens will be much handier and easier to use … if installed on a shelf at eye level…a shelf that leaves room on all sides for a replacement convenience… and having a counter…beneath it…to put food on before and after cooking…is another added convenience

The Gaggenau are also side swing opening but they do come with a hefty, hefty price tag. We got our Gagg combi steam oven off ebay half off. It was a 270 (previous model to the 400 series available now). It was new in box with a 5-year warranty. It works great and I love that it is plumbed. It's worth considering. Appliances stores will often sell off demo models too with warranty and I have seen items on craigslist. I use both my conventional oven and the combi oven for similar and different things. My conventional oven goes higher (to 500, the Gagg goes to 450) and my conventional oven has a broiler and it is bigger. The Gagg non-steam mode is convection so it also cooks faster/hotter and I'm still getting used to that (I've had it about 2 months). Sometimes I use the Gagg because I need two ovens, sometimes I use the Gagg as a steam oven or to jointly steam and roast. I love the flexibility. I do have a friend with the $300 cuisinart steam oven and she LOVES it, but she isn't doing a remodel right now and it lets her test run the combi steam oven idea. I'm pretty sure when she does update she'll get a combi steam oven. I'm not sure how it would look to have a drop down and side opening door. My initial thought is how well they match in terms of material is probably more important. Good luck.

Bosch Microwave-convection oven counter top

I have a 10 yr old microwave oven that will soon need replacement--ran across a Bosch combination unit that I could buy in barely used ( one month) condition for $300-400--retail price is about $700. Bosch HMB8050 Stainless Steel Built-In Series 1.5 Cubic Foot Capacity Wondered if anyone had experience or advice? I like the concept of having a longer lasting oven with the convection feature..but even at this price, it is expensive. Thanks in advance John

I have the Cuisinnart with the convection feature. It is well worth the money (~$100). I use it for most baking (baked potatoes, toast, roasted veggies) for the two of us, and only fire up the big oven if we have guests. You will have to clean it if you tend to spatter grease all over the inside - if I'm going to do that sort of baking/roasting I use the self-cleaning oven. I do line the bottom crumb tray with aluminum foil to make de-crumbing easier.

prospect711: Thanks for your reply! I had my eye on the Sharp R-820JS, which is the stainless steel sister of your Sharp! (It sounds like an amazing appliance that pretty much does it all!) I just couldn't figure out how to get the size to work. Having a deeper cabinet is a Very interesting idea! I'm going to show this to DH to see if we can somehow swing it with our Ikea cabinetry. If only it had convection too - I was really hoping for a little back up oven to cook and reheat small meals. Hmmm... Thanks so much for your reply, gorgeous photo, and the food for thought! colorfast: Okay, so it seems that the microwave/convection combos, unless they are the very wide OTR type, are pretty deep. I'll stop hunting for one that isn't. (No more wild goose chase!) We were planning on having 15" wide cabinets flanking the fridge on either side as a pantry (floor to almost ceiling height), but, maybe we should make one wider set of cabinets instead, where we can put the microwave/convection oven. I love how you have yours next to a counter. That seems to be an ideal setup to me. As for recessing it into the wall, I think we're out of luck, since the wall backs a stairwell leading to the basement as well as the stairs leading upstairs. I'm not sure that we can mess with that. Do you have pictures? Read the instruction manual to see how much room you need on each side of the unit for appropriate ventilation. If you follow those guidelines it should not be dangerous. Ugly? Perhaps. Show us some pictures. Also, how much counterspace will it consume?

I too have an apartment galley kitchen with a gas range. Our building has had gas line repair work for 10 months and I have been without a range. I purchased a Breville countertop convection oven and love it. It heats up so much faster than the range and cooks more quickly.

For 10 months it has sat on top of our range burners because we haven't been able to use the burners. Now they are turning the gas back on and I want to use the convection on the countertop. It is really convenient but it takes up so much counter space. I'm also aware of how much steam heat it kicks out and don't love the thought of all that hitting the underneath side of my nice cabinets. On top of the stove no, it hits the metal bottom of the microwave, which is fine but I'm not keen on sitting it under my cabinets. I'm following this thread to hear what others have to say.

I did a shallow cabinet with the microwave under the counter and the convection oven on top. It was in a space that would otherwise be hard to use and I love the setup!
