Above average temperatures and way below average rainfall. Does not bode well for forest fire season.

Here on the beautiful central coast of central coast of California we are having lower than average temperatures which is not good for wine grapes and avocados.

I am having the same as you...highs in the 90's, no rain in sight and trying to keep

my flowers watered. Weatherman just keeps saying, "still more of the same" day

after day, it seems.

We've had only a couple of what I'd call hot/warm days here on the coast, but it has been dry. I relocated a couple of plants over the long weekend and found beds much more dry than I'd expected. Sprinklers coming out this week. I rarely begin watering beds and lawn before July but I don't see anything in the upcoming forecast to let me off the hook. I've never had the vintage irrigation system at this house reworked and can't use it as is. There are 12 zones. 25 heads per zone and many of them broken. City water was not metered when it went in and now water is expensive. I have a huge landscape map left here, a shallow closet in this office with all the system workings in it, but I open the door, look at all the dials and settings and none of it makes any sense at all to me. I blank out and just close the door again :)

I had a landscape architect here soon after we purchased and he did about the same thing, had a new system in mind. But then he called me and asked if he could postpone due to a family health issue and I said of course. That was almost 10 years ago.

Hot and dry about 450 miles SW of Chicago. 5” of rain short for 2023, so far.

Crops are nearly all planted and germinated well but now languishing in the dry dirt and hot sun.

Here in PA, we have had NO rain since the end of April, making May the driest one since 1880, and even worse, it is the third driest month of all time and all months. The humidity is extremely low at Arizona levels and although I don't like humidity, this dry weather is scary. Farmers can't plant because with sand for soil, nothing will germinate. Bushes are dying and wildfires are happening. This will be the summer from Hades!

I can echo Lily. The ground is so dry its like cement. I water my flower containers every day. On the plus side, its been lovely temps with no humidity. I am usually blasting the AC by now but have only had it on twice.

It's been a cool May here in central Va, so cool in that my lettuces are still sweet and they have turned bitter in the past by now. My melon plants do not like the cool temps but I can live with them and hope it lasts. Rainfall has been below normal but it's been wet enough to keep most plants happy. I dread the upcoming 90's+ which will surely be just around the corner.

We are fortunate in our area of central Texas--lower temperatures than usual, and more rain. In fact, we have had to postpone mowing and garden work because the vegetation and soil is so damp.

Our humidity is high so any outside work has to be after the dew dries off a bit.

Ugh, same here. I'm a few hours north of you up the lake in Michigan. I hate to complain, because we had such a long winter, however.....I'm feeling a tad bit complainy.

I'm in Colorado Springs Black Forest. We got hammered yesterday! It was a steady down pour. Two days ago we got really small hail with our rain. The mountains are white with recent snow. The forecast for next weekend is rain, rain and more rain. Everything is VERY green. Horses out in the pastures are eating new grass....fresh every day! ❤️❤️❤️ Little ponds have formed along the roads. Frogs are croaking loudly. Eastern Missouri. Yes, rainless, but also pleasantly low humidity.

My neighbor hired a lawn mowing crew beginning about three years ago. Now, with the lack of rain, his lawn really shows the negative effects of mowing short. It is now weedy in a background of brown grass. Mow high, folks!

Yeah, I was going to post about mowing too. I finally broke down and mowed around the back of the house. It was green still, with clover and getting high. Knowing there was a chance of it being brownish underneath and maybe get crispy as the rainless week goes on I went ahead. Had the deck on #3, probably should have listened to my friend who's here doing exterior painting on the house and outbuildings. He said, "There's really no rush to mow, the grass isn't going to grow anyway until we get rain". Oh well.

We were up in Durango, Colorado over the holiday weekend and, thankfully, had great weather with highs only in the mid-70’s. Yesterday, back home here again, was hot and dry. Exhausting, as we had to spend pretty much all day outside getting the house ready for it to start being restuccoed this morning. Ugh! I am so sore today! Anyhoo, they’ve been at it out there since 8AM in 80-degree weather. Three days this week (W-F) and then three days to finish up next week. But, our weather forecast (at least today’s) is predicting several days of rain next week. We’ll see! Here in New Mexico, we pretty much can always use a bit of rain!

Our spring was slooow to come. We have high hopes of coming out of our drought, but as it looks this week when summer comes it will be dry and hot AGAIN.

We're 5° below normal in L.A. near the beach, and Palm Springs was 5-10° below normal last week. Earlier in the month, the weather was more than 20° below normal in Palm Springs, and so May has been a cold month - more like February, according to the weather reports.

Coastal southern California. Grey, over cast skies all day. Temps in the 60s. When the grey skies go away, by July at some point, we can have hot days. Santana winds blow in from the desert and bring warm and even hot air, and when we get them in mid August through September here, we can have highs over 100 degrees. But our nights are cool, lovely sleeping weather unlike the central Illinois river valley where I grew up with heat, humidity and mosquitoes day and night.

Gee, chisue, I had rain today. Well, to be specific my car got sprinkled on while I was at the theater in L’shire this afternoon. A few dozen raindrops. So now the car is sprinkled with measles spots. DH sprinkles the lawn in the morning, abiding by the municipal restrictions even before they are enacted. I felt sure we would get the rain today, since he watered, but it fell elsewere.

Totally dry, with the lawns turning brown. But rain is in the forecast starting this weekend. Not the long, soaking rain we need, but we'll be grateful for any precipitation at this point. Daytime temps have been in the 80s and rising, but nights are still very cool. My indoor temperature was only 61 when I got up this morning. I think it was 42 outside.

I'm visiting in the Dallas-Fort Worth area and we had thunder and rain showers yesterday, but sunny today with a little late afternoon cloudiness.

I'm in western .PA. The opposite side of the state from lily316. The weather has been very pleasant. High in the 80s and in the 50s at night. Thankfully no rain this week and maybe none next week. It is nice for a change not to plan around rain. My sump pump is still kicking on.

We average 151 days of rain and 203 cloudy days a year. We are not close to drought conditions. We didn't have drought conditions last year either.

We're in Northern Utah and May has been like a typical April. Raining every few days and everything is green green green. I wasn't even able to put my garden in until a month ago. Our dry farming alfalfa field looks really tall and lush. Now we just need a week of dry and hotter weather so we can cut it.

I was fulling expecting it to go from snow to blazin hot. It's been nice to mainly be in the 70s. Oh man i just looked at our 10 day forecast. Lots more rain to come.

so beastly hot and dry here in west central illinois, what little grass i have is burned to a crisp and the only things growing are the prickly pear cactus and sand burs.

Above average daytime temps, nights have been more normal. Haven't had rain in weeks, we might get some a week or so from now.

The Atlantic newsfeed today mentioned a site called Climate Explorer where you can look up weather records of just about every county in the US. It also has predictions. The recording spot closest to me looks like it's the Chicago Botanical Gardens.

We’ve had a marvelously pleasant spring and plenty of rain. Temperatures are only now becoming what I would call seasonably warm, upper eighties. If we don’t mow at least twice a week, our lawn looks like the house is deserted. I reside in northern Alabama at present.

May here in central Kentucky has been nice, with high temps mostly in the 70's or cooler. Last weekend was chilly and damp, but it's been sunny and nice this week. I think yesterday was the first day in May that the temperature got into the 80's. Rainfall has been more than adequate and I hope that continues. I'm not looking forward to high temps in the upper 80's for the next two days, but thankfully it's going to be cooler next week.

Lots of rain in NorCA in March so weeds and brush everywhere. Urban areas mowing, whacking, and goat grazing the hills, parks, and freeway landscaping as summer starts our hot/dry fire season. These days fire season is year-round, but it's worse in summer/fall as temps rise and we get those storms hitting the Sierras with dry lightning but little rain.

Winds are the biggest danger all over the state. There is so much vegetation in rugged, wild mountainous areas that when we get the summer/fall spells of hot, dry winds, it ups the fire danger to critical levels.

It's shaping up to be an El Nino year, but sometimes we'll get an early/heavy autumn rainy season from it, and sometimes we don't. Either way, temps will radically differ between NorCA and SoCA. Last year we had it pretty easy with few big wildfires, but SoCA got roasted, literally.

No telling yet what the rest of the year will be like. So far in NorCA it's been slightly below normal, with the usual spring gusty winds near the coast.

Chisue, I got the car washed today but I don’t think it will help. Watching Tom Skilling just now, lots of rain everywhere but here. We watch a Japanese news program over dinner, and they are having flooding there. Just nothing for us.

But, it was actually quite pleasant out today. and inside, too, now that I realize that DH had actually disconnected the AC last November. (“In case it accidentally came on in the winter.” Ummm…) Nice and comfy inside, now that we don’t need it tonight.

97 here in PA today and five weeks since we had a drop of rain. Driest May ever since 1880 and the 3rd driest month ever since then. Brush fires everywhere and no rain in the ten-day forecast but it won't be as hot.

Lily316, here in Pittsburgh our high yesterday was 88 and low humidity. It was pleasant. For a nice change we didn't have rain this week. Everything is still nice and green. Next week we're back into the 70s. I'll try to blow the weather over the mountains to you. Lol

We're doing what we can to bring rain: Had the windows washed yesterday. Our great guy also cleaned up the screened porch -- washed screens, pressure washed the furniture. Consider it our $500 'rain dance'.

Does that sound like a lot? We have a lot of glass, and he cleaned all the sills and around the frames of the operable casements. There were years of dirt, bug remnants, spider eggs, general yuck. I was surprised to find no ladybugs.

Thanks for doing what you can, chisue! HS graduation appears to be today, outside. When one of ours was graduating and the weather was iffy, they told me that every year no matter the weather forecast, they set up both outside AND inside, just in case. So, no help there for bringing rain.

92 today, in Central KY. It rained all day, I think, Sunday. The next day I went with my daughter on a short trip to see my son in Nebraska. It was so hot and humid there. It hasn't rained the rest of the week here. Thankfully a friend and her husband watered my garden for me on Tuesday.

I noticed how dry the ground/fields were driving through Illinois and Indiana. Missouri was very green, though, as was Nebraska. We got a nice downpour in Omaha on Thursday. The day before we went to a botanical garden. It was hot and humid, miserable, and they wouldn't let us buy tickets for the tram ride for another hour. The tram that was waiting outside only had 3 people on it. About 15 minutes into our walk, that tram passed us by. So annoying. The various gardens were also a long way apart from each other. Went back to our hotel and showered again and then my son showered at his apartment. It was that bad.

Going out to water the raised beds and potted stuff again in a little bit. Most of my garden loved the heat. Chard was massive and the peas were loaded on the vines. Potato plants are starting to flower. The carrots are doing really well too. Some things didn't survive though.

It's been dry for going on 3 weeks IIRC; forecast said maybe scattered T-storms late today (no sign of them so far),and no rain forecast for the next week either. Temps hitting low 90s the past 5 days too. Supposed to cool a little tomorrow.

The grass at the intersections of the driveway with the sidewalk is very brown.

Still, the humidity has been low, so I wasn't really uncomfortable shoveling and loading/unloading mulch the past several days.

After our mild winter and wet spring, many perennial flowers have been unusually full of blooms - the decades old lilacs were absolutely covered, my very old rose that lives under the maple tree both sent up many new stems and just exploded in blooms (super fragrant too), peonies also very lush in bloom this spring. I hope we don't have prolonged drought this summer that sets them back again.

Very hot and dry here in northern Illinois. My lawn is like straw and I’m only watering the flowers and tomato plants. Washed the car yesterday in the hopes that might bring some rain however that strategy failed.

Well, we got the promised thunderstorm about 40 minutes ago, with some very close lightening strikes, but only about 10 minutes or less of more than sparse rain. So, I will still have to go out and water my potted trees this evening.

Be careful what you wish for. Lines of scattered storms came down from the north and missed us as usual but then around 7 or 8 a nasty storm came thru the city and onto our town and was violent with hail and horrible winds. The sky was yellow which is scary in itself and it poured briefly. It probably did more damage than the little rain it brought but the weird thing is we went out to eat three miles away and I noticed no wet roads and the waiter said they had nothing. The next town over had none and someone from my town put on FB that we had wind but not much rain and our town is only a mile long. And many are without power. Ours flickered and then went off for ten minutes but others will be out until tomorrow. My house is surrounded by huge trees. Two actually touch over the tall house, so we were anxious. At least I won't have to water for the first day in a long time.
