Comments (4)Where are you generally, both USDA growing zone and nearest large city? Where will the porch be? Is this a landscape you created and so have reasons for the layout, or is it one you inherited with the house that might not fit your needs? If it is your creation, could you explain your goals in making it? If it isn’t yours, think about what you want from the front yard: flowers, lounge area, kids’ play area, shelter from a busy street, etc. and share it here. Think also about the amount of interest, time, and energy you have to maintain the landscape. Right now it looks like the only winter interest is the line of evergreen shrubs against the house, and they aren’t particularly interesting because they are a hedge that blends in with the paint on the lower part of the house. In my area I would want more evergreens or plants with colored twigs or interesting bark or branching, including some farther out into the yard where they could be seen from the house or porch windows during inclement weather. It also looks like you have some low-growing weeds or else a really irregular ground cover between your perennials along the drive and between the rock wall and what I assume is the road where the first photo was taken. I would want relatively dense evergreen ground covers with minimal mulch between them, added just until they have spread enough to fill the space between the perennials. This will help reduce weeding, though it will still need to be done. What is the story with the large expanses of gravel or mulch? Do the areas get used as patios (and if so, do they work comfortably in that role?) Or do they have another function such as a foil for outdoor sculpture or a kids’ play area or are they mostly left empty as in the current photos?...See MoreLooking for front yard landscaping ideas... modern and low maintenance
Comments (3)Though somewhat leaning, without the branch at least the tree has a symmetrical vase shape. I grant it would have been nice to cure the lean, too. but that's what happens when a tree is neglected during its formative years. Can't rewrite history. All we can do is make the best future possible....See MoreLooking to update & modernize house exterior. Siding? Stonework Ideas?
Comments (5)Thank you for your suggestions Patricia. There is a circular driveway that is hard to see from the picture we posted so I'm not sure how a walkway would work as it would have to cut across the driveway. We currently have asbestos shingles and have painted them 3 times over the last 20 years. I think they kind of make the house feel dated. The small windows are from our master bedroom redo 20 years ago. They were actually very modern looking when we put them in. I'm attaching a picture of how they look over our bed, but your right they do appear small from the outside....See MoreLooking for ideas to modernize sunroom on front of house
Comments (9)I live in a cold climate and love our sunroom, we call it a 3 season room. They are very desirable around here. We use it spring, summer and fall as our livingroom. Sometimes if we need the room in the winter we open the slider door and turn on the heater. At one time it was a porch and could only be used in the summer. I would never consider turning it back into a porch and it would lower the homes value. Its use would be greatly limited. How large is it? It hard to tell on the picture, but if it is narrow balcony then I don't think it would hurt the value greatly, if it is room size then it would hurt the value if you live in a cold climate. You could reframe it with different windows or paint your home to blend with it....See MoreBarbara Almandarz
