Is this an annual planting of primarily flowering plants? Or a perennial planting?

For annuals, there is a wide variety of plants that bloom beautifully in part-shade; it's the denser shade that's the problem. Many full-sun plants do very well in bright- or part-shade. Heliotrope and geraniums (Pelargonium) spring immediately to mind, and I've also had salvia and ageratum bloom beautifully in part-sun. Then of course there's New Guinea impatiens, regular impatiens, and wax begonias. Foliage plants like elephant ears (Colocasia), Persian Shield, and all sorts of coleus can be planted in the mix for foliage effect.

For years impatiens are my go to annual. They do like semi shade, but where I live in the north they also do well in full sun and preform the best for me. They bloom all summer without having to deadhead them. I just bought 2 flats today for my planters.

Mxk3 - It’s anything that works. [g] It’s just for the season. There will be a number of locations to place the pots that will have some sun on them. They do have a pool area with a deck which has a line of trees behind it, so I know it’s not full sun.

Ageratum is one I’d forgotten about, that I know performed well for me in part shade. NG Impatiens? I prefer those to regular impatiens. Wasn’t there some kind of disease issue with Impatiens not too long ago? I don’t normally use them. Wax begonias - always perform for me.

Functionthenlook - What do you usually grow with your impatiens?

Dee - I’d forgotten about Tuberous begonias, I love those too. Will they take much sun? I thought sweet potato vine needed full sun? Hostas are a nice idea. So are ferns and daylilies, but after purchasing the pot and the soil - large 20” pot - I’m trying to keep the cost reasonable. But maybe I’ll see something that isn’t too bad. I love those ideas too.

I’m not sure what the situation is either. I’ve been to the property multiple times but I haven’t figured out how much sun they have. It would be great if there is a half sun situation, I just don’t know.

Four o'clocks have also performed well for me in part sun, and I've started seed for them, but, I need them for myself [g] and I started them late, so they are going to take awhile to get going. Three seedlings would fill a large pot and bloom all season.

prairiemoon2 z6b MA For fillers it varies year to year. This year I'm using coleus. Last year I had so many babies on my spider plants i used them as fillers. Lol. For spiller I use sweet potato vines that I winter over. In my larger planters I also use elephant ears for hight. I also winter over them.

Functionthenlook - You are like me, most of the time, I'm trying to use what I have. I add baby perennials to give them a chance to grow larger to add to another area later.

I am trying something new for Sweet Potato seedlings this year. I saw a YouTube Video about adding a whole sweet potato to a glass of water, suspended in the water and just letting it grow until it has a lot of stems on it and then cutting the stems and rooting those in water. So far it is working. I just started late, so not sure what result I'll get but if it works I can do it next year.

I take sweet potato cuttings in the fall right before the frost kills them. I cut about 6 inches off the end of each vine, strip off all but two leaves and stick them in water to root. They root easily. After I get a good root I plant them in pots and keep them on my window sill for the winter. I tried keeping them in water once but the roots rotted. 9 times out of 10 the next fall they will have also formed the potato bulb which I then store.

I tried this annual for the first time last year and I was impressed with how it performed in shade.

OH, right....Browalia. I did that one year and it was great. I always forget about it. I am also working with a blue pot and that will go well. I find that they aren't always easy to find but I'll call around. Thanks rouge.
